Strong Start for Canada at the XI ISF World Championships

(Ottawa, ON) - Canada shut out New Zealand 9-0 in their opening
game of the XI ISF World Championships in Beijing China.

Canada roared out of the gates in the top of the first inning
combining 5 hits to take an early 4 run lead. Canada would continue
to add 2 runs in the second, 1 run in the third and 2 more in
the fifth before the game was called due to the "run rule" giving
Canada the 9-0 victory.

Kaila Holtz (North Vancouver, BC) received the start for Canada
in the circle and allowed only 2 hits and struck out 4 batters
in 2 innings of work. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) came to
Holtz's relief in the third inning and allowed only 2 hits and
struck out 2 batters to preserve the shut out.

Canada produced 15 hits in the match with notable efforts from
Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC), 4 for 4 at the plate, Sheena Lawrick
(Calgary, AB), 2 for 3 with 3 RBI's, Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON),
2 for 2 with 2 RBI's and Cindy Eadie (Brantford, ON), 2 for 3
with 2 RBI's.

"This was a big win for us" stated Matthews. "It was good to
get the nerves out. It was a great team offensive effort. We
have come a long way as a team and it is really starting to show
out on the field."

"I'm very please with the way we played our first game" added
Lori Sippel, Senior Women's National Team Head Coach. "We wanted
to start the tournament on the right foot and we did just that.
We put runs on the board early which gave our pitchers a chance
to settle in and get used to the 20 second clock. It was a total
team effort and I'm excited for things to come."

Canada will need to place in the top 4 (or 5 if China finishes
in the top 4) at the tournament in order to secure an Olympic
berth "Our goal in coming here is the same as every team" stated
Sippel. "We are here to qualify for the 2008 Olympics and we
want to earn that position outright."

Canada will face Great Britain on Sunday August 27th at 1:00pm
and will look to improve their record to 2 wins. For more detailed
