Defending world champs outclass White Sox
Thursday August 31st 2006

USA have been world champions for over 20 years and today against
the NewZealand Community Trust White Sox at the 2006 Women’s
World SoftballChampionships they showed their class. 

In an outstanding display of power hitting USA defeated the White
Sox15-0 in four innings in Beijing, China this afternoon. 

The Americans who have an unbeaten record in the tournament,
showed theirintentions for the game right from the outset as
they scored four runs inthe first inning, two more in the second
inning another seven in thethird and two more in the fourth inning
to close out the game. 

White Sox coach Mike Walsh tried to mix it up on the mound using
threepitchers in the game but none of the trio could keep a lid
on theAmerican hitting. 

Sheree Cartwright started the game on the mound and pitched two
inningsbefore being replaced by Michal Tangaroa for the third
inning. Fiona Timupitched the fourth and final inning of the
game.

With the bat in hand Kalala Faalogo was the outstanding figure
for NewZealand picking up two hits from her two at bats. She
had little supportthough with Melanie Hulme being the only other
White Sox player to pickup a hit in the game. 

After the game White Sox coach Mike Walsh was not looking to
make anyexcuses admitting the performance of his team was not
goodenough.

“USA was too good and too strong. The result is terrible and
veryembarrassing we made to many errors today and gave up to
many walks,”said Walsh.

Despite the score line the White Sox have to bounce back fast
if they areto get their world championships campaign back on
track. Tomorrow the NewZealanders play Great Britain at 4.30pm
(NZ time) the White Sox will betargeting a win from that game
to keep their playoff chances alive.

To qualify for the playoffs the White Sox have to finish in the
top fourfrom their pool after round robin play. New Zealand currently
has a twowin three loss record with two games remaining in pool
play. 

In the only other completed game from day five of the championships
todayJapan who are unbeaten in pool B also showed their hitting
power with a16-0 win over Botswana.
