Canada Wins Tough Battle Versus Italy

(Beijing, China) - Canada shutout Italy 1-0 in their fifth game
of the XI ISF World Championships of softball in Beijing, China
to improve their record to four wins and one loss.

Pitching and defense continued to be Canada's strength in what
was Canada's closest fought battle of the tournament. While
both teams managed to produce six hits in the game, it was Canada
who pulled off a 1-0 victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) led Canada to the win starting
the attack in the bottom of the seventh inning with a solid single
to centerfield. Matthews then stole second putting herself in
scoring position. Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) followed
with a double to left field driving in Matthews to give Canada
the 1-0 victory.

Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) went the distance for Canada in
the circle. Lawrie gave up six hits while striking out five
helping Canada to a 1-0 shut out victory. Matthews continued
her dominance at the plate managing three of the six Canadian
hits.

"Both teams came out to play" stated Lori Sippel, Senior Women's
National Team Head Coach. "Great pitching and defense on both
sides made the offense work very hard. We pressed until the
very end and came up with the win and we now need to focus on
our next game versus South Africa."

The shutout victory represents Canada's third shutout victory
of the tournament giving Canada one of the lowest runs against
average in the tournament. Canada has allowed only five runs
in five games.

Canada (4-1) will now face South Africa (0-5) before facing the
Host China (5-0). In other IX ISF World Championship action
tomorrow, the undefeated USA and China will face off, in Pool
A, as will the undefeated Australia and Japan, in Pool B.
