Canada Edged by China at Softball Worlds

(Beijing, China) - Canada's gold or silver medal hopes at the
XI ISF World Championships have been crushed as they were shutout
by the Host, China 1-0 in their final round robin game.

Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) received the start and went the
distance for Canada. Despite giving up the early first inning
run, Mackin was solid through her six innings of work giving
up only one run to China and striking out six.

Despite pressuring throughout the game, Canada's best chance
came in the seventh as Angela Lichty (Guelph, ON) doubled to
get in scoring position with two out. China pitcher Wei, eliminated
the threat as she forced Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) to ground
out ending the inning and the game.

"The Chinese Team capitalized on their one opportunity early
in the game and we were unable to convert on our opportunities"
said Lori Sippel, Senior Women's National Team Head Coach. "Robin
threw a great game throwing a 1 hitter against an aggressive
Chinese squad. Matthews again was an offensive spark plug beginning
the top of the first inning with a solid single."

Although Canada has advanced to the playoff round in the third
overall position in Pool A, Canada must set its sights on the
Bronze medal as the loss against China has eliminated them from
the Gold or Silver medal hunt. Canada will face Chinese Taipei
in the first of four possible games as they push for the Bronze
medal. The remaining games for Canada will be single elimination.
