Six Teams Remain - Canada Still in the Hunt at Softball Worlds

(Beijing, China) - Canada is still in the hunt for a gold medal
at the XI ISF World Championships after defeating Chinese Taipei
3-2.

Canada took the early lead in the first inning off of a Sheena
Lawrick (Calgary, AB) single scoring Melanie Matthews (Surrey,
BC) who previously reached after being hit by a pitch. Canada
continued to increase their lead in the fifth inning on a solid
double by Matthews driving in Rachel Schill (Kitchener, ON) and
Kristy Odamura (Richmond, BC) giving Canada the 3-0 lead.

Chinese Taipei responded in the sixth trying to mount a come
back posting 2 runs late in the inning. Despite pressuring for
the lead, Canadian pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) ended
the Taipei threat to push Canada to the 3-2 win. On the night,
Lawrie struck out eight batters and allowed four hits.

"The team came out ready to play. It is amazing how having one
life can spark everyone to soul search and bring their best selves
to the park" stated Lori Sippel, Head Coach of the Senior Women's
National Team. "The early lead took a little pressure off but
the bats went silent until the 5th inning. Kristy and Rachel
started things rolling and Melanie (our top hitter at this tournament)
was able to get the much needed go ahead runs."

"Tough loss yesterday but the team responded like Elite athletes
should" added Sippel. "They came to play and got the job done."
"Our focus goes to Australia tomorrow for an opportunity to earn
a berth in the 2008 Olympics outright".

Canada will now face Australia in their push for the podium.
As well as advancing in the playoff round, the winner will clinch
a 2008 Olympic berth. For complete statistical information, please
