Aussies qualify for 2008 Olympics


The Australian Open Women’s team, Aussie Spirit, today haveofficially
qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games after defeating Canada 7-2
in theplayoffs of the ISF Women’s World Championship. 

 

The win has secured the Aussie Spirit’s place in theOlympics,
with their hopes of winning a medal at the World Championships
stillalive!

 

Australia will play the winner of the Italy vs China game (currentlyunderway
in Beijing) later tonight which will see the winner play in the
Bronzemedal match in tomorrow’s play. The winner of the Bronze
medal match willgo into the Gold medal game. 

 

In the bottom of the third inning, Australia put a runon the
board when Simmone Morrow crossed the home plate. Canada replied
inthe top of the fourth with two runs.

 

Australia finishedstrongly with some good base running and hitting
which rattled the oppositionpitchers. Belinda Wright, Stacey
Porter, Marissa Carpadios, Simmone Morrow andTracey Mosley all
scored in the bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. 

 

Sandra Allen hit a home run in the bottom of the sixth tosecure
the win and see Australia into theOlympic Games. 

 

Pitcher Melanie Roche shut down the Canadian team and wasrelieved
in the seventh innings by Kelly Hardie. 

 

Australia’sTracey Mosley injured her shoulder which saw Natalie
Titcume play at first base.
