Canada's McIntosh Hurls Perfect Game and Advances Canada to the
Playoffs

 

(Puerto Rico) - The Junior Women's National Team retained third
position and advanced to the playoff round after Leah McIntosh
threw a perfect game shutting out Ecuador 13-0 in the final round
robin game of the II Pan American Championships.

 

McIntosh (Whitby, ON), who has been solid for Canada throughout
the tournament, came up big in yesterday's round robin game against
Ecuador throwing a perfect game.  Backed by solid defense, the
Canadians did not allow a single Ecuador player to reach a base.
 The game was called in the fifth inning do to the "run rule"
giving the Canadians a 13-0 win and bringing their record to
6 wins and 2 losses earning them third place overall.

"After a tough loss from Venezuela yesterday, we really did bounce
back today' said McIntosh.  "It was great to see the team gel
and we really did get the job done.  I went out pitching this
game like any other, knowing I had to throw hard, hit the spots
and work on spins. I feel really good about this game and I am
really pumped for the playoffs on Friday."

In other II Pan American Championship Action - After a tough
loss to Venezuela on Tuesday, Canada bounced back to shut out
Columbia 8-0 in early II Pan Am Championship action yesterday.

 

Nicole Abel (Kitchener, ON) received the start for the Canadians
and allowed only 1 hit in 5 innings of work leading the Canadians
to victory.

 

The Canadian offense wasted no time as they took to an early
2 run lead in the first inning.  Led by Heidi Purtzer (Scottsdale,
AZ) who went 2 for 3 on the night with 2 RBIs and Carly Moir
(White Rock, BC) who also went 2 for 3 on the night with 3 RBIs,
Canada added two runs in the third and four in the fourth to
end the game after five innings due to the "run rule"

 

"Today's game was a good opportunity for the team to gain some
momentum heading into the playoffs" stated Moir.  "Last night's
loss has only made us stronger and I know we will continue to
rise to whatever challenges come our way."

 

Third place Canada will now face fourth place Puerto Rico in
the first semi final game on Friday, November 17, 2006.  The
winner of the game will then face the loser of the first place
USA and the second place Venezuela game in the bronze medal match
up wit the winner of the bronze medal game ultimately advancing
to the gold medal game.
