Womens League Comes to Melbourne
The second round of the four part National Womens Softball League
iscoming to Melbourne on Friday 8 December. The eventwill see
the best of Australiasfemale softballers in action as they prepare
for international events andBeijing 2008.
This tough three day event will takeplace at Jells Park in Waverley
and will see teams from four State Instituteand Academy of Sport
teams (VIS, QAS, WAIS, NSWIS), the Diamonds and the Starz(Under
19 Womens team) slide it out on the diamond.
The NSWIS Firestars won Round One ofthe competition in Brisbane
last monthdefeating arch rivals QAS Heatwave in the final 11-4.
The QAS Heatwave picked up six winsfrom six games, but the young
and inexperienced Starz team provided two toughgames against
the early competition leaders and then the NSWIS Firestarsoutplayed
them in the final.
WAIS Coastals Head Coach, KereJohanson, would be happy with four
wins and holding onto second place based onthe teams defensive
average conceding only 13 runs in six games.
The competition promises to heat upthis weekend with the VIS
Titans on home soil. The Titans started off Round Oneslowly losing
their first two games, but with the powerhouse hitting of NatalieTitcume,
who won Best Batter with a batting average of 0.667, and the
return ofJustine Smethurst from Hawaii, Head Coach, Jason Kumeroa,
will be looking for vast improvements.
There will be plenty of action withthe potential of a few upsets
as teams attempt to consolidate their positionson the points
table as well as fine-tune their preparations for the NationalChampionships
in January 2007.
The last two rounds of the NationalWomens League will be held
at the New South Wales Softball Centre atBlacktown Olympic Park
on 7-13 January and 23-25 February 2007.
