QAS too strong for Starz

The Starz, Australian Under 19 Women’s Squad, surprised everyone
but coach Leanne Evans as they went into the Round 2 Finals of
the National Women’s League today.

The QAS Heatwave was undefeated going into the final and provided
a solid performance to outclass the Starz 5-3.

The teams battled the heat at Jells Park with the Starz playing
a triple-header and the QAS Heatwave playing a double-header
for the day.

QAS’ Jodie Bowering opened up the scoring with a home run over
right field and Melinda Weaver soon followed for a home run to
centre field.

The Starz were quick to answer in the top of the third with Sheree
Schenk moved around the bases by Stacey McManus and Monica Gray.

Danielle Stewart scored QAS’ third run off a Sandra Allen double
to centre right. Allen was helped home by Tracey Mosley and Jodie
Bowering to take QAS to a three run lead at the bottom of the
third.

Renee Gloss and Nicole Deegenaars helped close the gap for the
Starz with Gloss scoring in the top of the fourth with a double
to centre field and Deegenaars stealing home in the top of the
fifth.

Stewart scored on a passed ball for her second and to take the
QAS to a 5-3 lead going into the sixth.

Jocelyn McCallum was relieved by Sandra Avery at the top of the
sixth for the QAS. Avery held the Starz bats until the top of
the seventh where the Starz got three hits.

The Starz Monica Gray was thrown out by QAS catcher Marissa Carpadios
to secure the win for the QAS.

Sandra Allen (QAS Heatwave) won the Batting Award with an average
of 0.571, Felicity Witt (NSWIS Firestars) won the Pitching Award
and Danielle Stewart (QAS Heatwave) was named MVP with her batting
average of 0.500, 7 runs batted in, 2 home runs and a slugging
average of 1.000.
