Pitching arsenal the hot item in women’s draft
Tuesday December 12th 2006

The battle for pitching strength has been a feature of the New
ZealandCommunity Trust Women’s National League player draft heldtonight.

Two franchises Southern Pride and Central Vikings went into the
drafttonight without any pitchers in the squads. Southern Pride
has picked uptalented young Waikato pitcher Courtney Maihi and
Victoria Reyland fromNorth Harbour. The Vikings team have named
former international pitcherCarina Hale of Auckland and have
reclassified one of their protectedplayers Rachel Kairau as a
pitcher.

Along with picking up two pitchers in the draft tonight Southern
Pridehas also selected four other players’ catcher Pauline Tahuri,
CourtenayO’Donnell, Aria Haeata and Lisa Pohatu. Southern Pride
coach KathMcGilbert is confident the selections made tonight
will add a competitiveedge to her team. 

“Both pitchers Courtney and Victoria played in the National League
lastyear and while it is going to be tough for them I think they
can handleit,” said McGilbert. 

In looking at her squad McGilbert says it is a young team but
she ishopeful of developing some good young talent for the benefit
of both theSouthern Pride franchise region and New Zealand softball
as awhole.

For Central Vikings coach Israel Nukunuku the acquisition of
Carina Haletonight was a big bonus as she brings a lot of experience
to the team.Hale has tasted success in the National League in
the past as she waspart of the victorious Auckland team last
season while she has alsopitched Hutt Valley to the title as
a draft selection. 

Along with Hale the Central Vikings have made six other draft
selectionsRise Kato, Amelia Rika, Lisa Arkell, Lydia Isaacs,
Jackie Rameka andPaula Hokianga. 

Other teams to make selections from the draft tonight were Wellington
whopicked up Brooke Cutting, Sanita To’o and Hop Weber. Canterbury
has addedOkawa Priest and Ngahuia Harris to their squad.
