Subject: Dean Schick Memorial Trophy - report from Trevor Rowse

Dean Schick Memorial Trophy. Individual awards. A report from
Trevor Rowse.
These were sponsored by Sirius Sports/Schutt, a keen supporter
of
the Northcote club's attempt to keep their series at the top
flight
of national tournaments.
Organiser Danny Frew mentioned that it was the first time that

the series had been played since the death of club stalwart Don

Freeman, the man who had done so much to keep the club going
when all
else was failing. It was the same with Dean Schick, in the old
Derori days.
Danny continues to provide the most comprehensive programme of

detailed stats from the 14 tournaments, and there are some
fascinating aspects to it.
One of these is the lack of Ramblers' successes. Only once has
it
gone to that team. Christchurch, so often so close in recent
years,
made the break-through this time. Last season it was the turn
of Hutt
City United after years of supporting the event. Hutt went on
to win
the nationals. It appears that Christchurch could do the same
this
season, on home turf.
Dean Wallace has been there every year, as has Heinie Shannon
and
Lyndon Andrew. Three more dedicated men would be hard to find.

Shocker, Doggie and Billy, all stars.
Last season Ramblers lost to Metro in the plate final. This year

they lost again, to Hutt, the gritty team which bonds so closely.
Poneke-Kilbirnie is by far the most dominant side in the history

of both the Vic Guth and the Schick. So often the side has taken
all
the money. This time Christchurch took out PK in the semi, but
only
after a tiebreaker.
The Parklands Christchurch United Devils were: Glen Roff coach,

Barry Annandale manager, Marie Byrne scorer, Jared Welsh, Penese

Iosefo, Scott Dale, Clayton, Ellis, Darren Davies, Jamie Frisby,
Paul
Delatour, Jayden Moore, Murray Lanini, Michael Sands, Bowen
Annandale, Daniel Milne, Bradley Annandale, Gareth Cook and Nigel
Stevens.
The awards:
Top pitcher was Miramar's Craig Gibson with 0.55. Top batter
was
Christchurch man Daniel Milne who managed 10 from 16, .625.
Brad Rona (Northcote) was the home run champ as well as driving

in six while Ramblers' Nathan Nukunuku, unparalleled in the art,

stole five bases. He just wants to go.
Awards went to the tournament team, plus umpire, scorer, coach
and manager.
They should give one to BJ and his ground crew team, covered
in
white plaster and dust, always pouncing on the diamonds right
after
the final out. Pity about the moles who keep chewing great holes
in
the batting boxes.
Danny Frew deserves one for his dedication to stats, as well
as
his work with the tournament committee. So does statistician
Carolyn
McQueen. Mention must also go to scorer Cushla Shepherd, who
also
assists Roosters. She and husband Dave are off to Japan on a
teaching
stint at the end of the season.
Life is different now, with fewer and fewer volunteers, and they

must be celebrated.
And a special award should go to the Devils after the nightmare

trip from Christchurch, after the plane was damaged and they
had to
find spaces on other flights to get there for the Friday night
game.
Fancy beating Ramblers after all that shemozzle.
Other sponsors were Lion Breweries, Portacom, South Auckland

Charitable Trust, Oxford Charitable Trust, Hillcrest Promotions,

Browns Bay Fruit World and Wrigleys Gum. There is no tournament

without sponsors
