Hutt Valley sides looking
to continue their dominance

Friday March 16th

For the last three years the winner of the NZCT Women’s Open
Clubsoftball title has hailed from the Hutt Valley region and
going into thisseason’s event next week it is quite possible
that record could beextended.

Te Aroha won consecutive titles in 2004 and 2005 and then last
season theWainui Patriots claimed the title. For the 2006/07
tournament to behosted at Akina Park, Hastings next week, on
paper Te Aroha and Wainuiare once again shaping up as serious
contenders.

Te Aroha has nine current or former NZCT White Sox players in
their ranksalong with former NZCT White Sox coach Mike Walsh.
The defending champsWainui also look strong having picked up
NZCT White Sox pitcher MichelleKingi to give them fire power
on the mound to complement theinternational class of players
such as Api Stone O’Kane and the Lotesisters, Upu and Togi.

Other teams to watch include Waitakere and Northcote who are
currentlybattling it out in the Auckland competition. The Waitakere
team is madeup of a number of players who were part of the Auckland
team during therecent NZCT National League, while the Northcote
team is very similar tothe North Harbour side that placed third
at the NZCT National ProvincialChampionships in January.

While club pride will be on the line over the four day tournament
theevent will also provide important game time for a number of
players inthe Junior White Sox squad who are preparing for the
Junior Women’s WorldChampionships in July.

Junior White Sox coach Lynda O’Cain will be at the club nationalscoaching
the Auckland Marist side and she says all game time her JuniorWhite
Sox players can get ahead of the world championships is important.

“Most of the squad will be at the club nationals and it will
be a goodopportunity to see how they are doing and gauge where
they are at. Theclub nationals will be a chance for the players
to really step up in thesenior environment,” said O’Cain.

The title of 2006/07 Women’s National Club Champions will be
battled outby 14 teams over the four days of the tournament.
For round robin playthe 14 teams have been split into two pools
with the top two teams fromeach pool moving on to a finals series
for the title after round robinplay. The tournament final will
be held on Sunday afternoon.
