Canada finishes round robin undefeated
(Surrey, BC) - It was a storybook evening at the 14th Canada
Cup softball tournament in White Rock/Surrey, BC. Team Canada
- currently ranked 5th in the World - was up against the Japanese
National Team (ranked 2nd), on a beautiful summer evening. The
winner of the game would remain undefeated in pool play and take
first place in the red pool going into playoffs.
After giving up two runs in the top of the 1st inning in front
of a spirited crowd, Team Canada threatened to tie things up
in the bottom of the frame and was successful in pushing one
run across, taking advantage of a wild pitcher who walked in
the run with the bases loaded and only one out. However, Japan
was able to escape the inning only allowing one run and holding
on to a 2-1 lead.
Both teams continued to place runners on base, but were not able
to score any runs until the fourth inning when hometown hero
Tamra Howren (White Rock, BC) hit a powerful homerun to straight
away center field, driving in three runs with the blast. Following
the homerun, Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) tripled to right field
and later scored on a passed ball. Canada scored a total of four
runs in the frame to take a 5-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.
Japan was unable to respond, and was kept off balance with a
strong performance from winning pitcher Robin Mackin (Newmarket,
ON). Mackin pitched seven innings, giving up just four hits while
striking out five.
Heading into the playoffs on Friday, Team Canada (6-0) will take
on Chinese Taipei (3-3) who finished fourth in the white pool
at 3:30 pm (PT) on Diamond 1 at Softball City. Additional information
