Canadabounces back and keeps Championship hopes alive

 

(Surrey,BC) – Team Canada bounced back from a tough loss to Japan
Elite lastnight with a 7-0 win against Japan’s Denso Club this
afternoon at theCanada Cup in Surrey, BC. The Canadians took
advantage of timely hitting and aJapanese error to put some runs
on the board, while their pitching was strongenough to hold Japan’s
Denso Club to only four hits over seven innings.

 

Aftergoing down in order in the first two innings, Canada opened
the scoring in thetop of the third inning when Melanie Matthews
(Surrey, BC) hit a boomingtwo-run home run to score Noemie Marin
(Acton-Vale, QC) who had reached base ona single earlier in the
inning. The red and white added four more runs in thefifth inning
to open up a 6-0 lead. Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) started the inningby
reaching base on a Japanese fielding error, and moved to second
on a singleby Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK). Marin then delivered
a double to scoreMcLean, followed by a two-run single by Erin
Gee (Burnaby, BC). Sheena Lawrick(Calgary, AB) later brought
Gee in to score on a sacrifice fly.

 

Japanthreatened to score in the bottom of the fifth, but ran
themselves out of theinning, continuously trying to take the
extra base. After they loaded the baseswith two outs, Canadian
pitcher Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) settled down andstruck out
the next batter to end the inning.

 

Canadafinally added their seventh run in the seventh inning,
as Janiva Willis(Irishtown, NB) hit an RBI single with the bases
loaded. The Denso Club wasunable to get anything going on offense
and the game ended in a 7-0 triumph forCanada.

 

Winningpitcher Robin Mackin threw seven strong innings, giving
up only four hits whilewalking three and striking out eight.
Marin and Gee each contributed two hits,while Matthews, Lawrick,
Willis, Cumpstone, Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam,BC) and Ashley
Van Boxmeer (Orange, California) each added a hit.

 

Withthe win, Canada moves on to face Japan’s National team tonight
at 8:30pm(PT). The winner of that game will play tomorrow afternoon
at 1:30pm (PT)against the losing team between the United States
and Japan Elite. The winningteam of that game will earn an automatic
berth to the Championship game.
