Canada keeps hopes alive with win over China

(Oklahoma City, OK) – The Canadian Senior Women’s National
team improved their record to 3-1 with a 5-1 win over China in
KFC World Cup of Softball III action here last night. Canada
will play its last game of the round-robin against the United
States (live on TSN, 1:00pm ET). A Canadian win against the USA
would make things very interesting in the final standings.

Against China, Canada once again jumped to an early lead and
never looked back while starting pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley,
BC) went the distance in the pitcher’s circle to earn the 5-1
win. After China stranded their leadoff hitter on base in the
top of the first inning, Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON), Noemie
Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) and Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) each delivered
RBI singles to give Canada an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of
the inning. After China scored a run in the top of the third
inning, Canada added two runs of their own in the fifth when
Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) hit a leadoff homerun to right
center field and Marin brought in the fifth run of the game on
an RBI groundout.

The early 3-0 lead was all Danielle Lawrie needed to secure the
victory. She pitched seven solid innings giving up only one run
on four hits with four walks and nine strikeouts.

Matthews and Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) each went
two-for-two with two runs scored for the red and white, while
Bradley, Marin and McLean each added a hit.

As mentioned earlier, Canada (3-1) will play the United States
(4-0) in their final round-robin game (TSN, 1:00pm ET) with a
lot at stake for both teams. Canada is currently battling with
Japan (3-1) for second place and a spot in the tournament final.
A Canadian win over the USA would make things a lot more interesting
as there would potentially be three teams tied for first place.
Japan will finish its schedule against China (1-2) at 9:30pm
(ET) tonight.
