Canadawins bronze medal at KFC World Cup of Softball

 

(OklahomaCity, OK) – The Canadian Senior Women’s National team
earned theirfirst medal of the summer after defeating China 8-2
to earn a bronze medal fromthe KFC World Cup of Softball III
which concluded yesterday in Oklahoma City.Canada’s bats woke
up in the third inning and they were able tomanufacture all the
runs they would need to beat China for the second time inthis
event.

 

Thegame was scoreless after two complete innings, but Canada
responded in a bigway in the top of the third inning. The Canadians
quickly loaded the bases astheir three first batters reached
base, and Sheena Lawrick (Calgary AB)delivered a one-out single
to right center field to bring in the two first runsof the game.
With the bases loaded again in the same inning, Noemie Marin(Acton-Vale,
QC) brought in another run on an infield single, followed by
anRBI walk by Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and RBI singles by Janiva
Willis(Irishtown, NB) and Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON). Canada
scored its seventh runof the inning when McLean scored on a wild
pitch.

 

Chinachipped away in their own half of the third by scoring two
runs, but was notable to bring anymore runners to the plate after
that. Meanwhile, Canada addedits eighth run of the game in the
top half of the sixth inning on an RBI singleby Alison Bradley
(Pinkerton, ON).

 

DanielleLawrie (Langley, BC) posted the complete game win for
the red and white, givingup two earned runs on five hits and
two walks while striking out six Chinesebatters.

 

Canadaearned its second straight bronze medal at the event, which
has quicklydeveloped into one of the top International Softball
events in only its thirdyear of existence. Canada had previously
finished in fifth place in theinaugural World Cup of Softball.

 

TheCanadian team will now set its sights on another podium finish
as it willcompete in the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil from July 23rd- 29th. The Senior Women were able to earn
silver medals atboth the 1999 and 2003 Pan Am Games, and will
be looking to dethrone the UnitedStates in this year’s event,
which also includes six other national teams(Argentina, Brazil,
Columbia, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela).
