PanAm Games: Women’s Softball Team wins twice, earns matchup
with USA 

(Cityof Rock, Brazil) - After opening its schedule with a 5-2
win over Argentinalast night, Canada kept its round-robin record
perfect after defeating PuertoRico 6-3 and Venezuela 1-0 at the
Pan American Games in City of Rock, Brazil. 

Inthe first game, Canada opened the scoring in the bottom of
the first inning asJennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) hit
a triple and scored on a sacrificefly by Sheena Lawrick (Calgary,
AB). They then added to that lead with two outsin the third inning
after Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) and Noemie Marin(Acton-Vale,
QC) reached base on back-to-back singles before Erin McLean(Whitby,
ON) hit a three-run home run. Bradley then led off the bottom
of thefifth with a double, and later scored on a double by McLean.
Canada chipped inagain in the sixth when Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,
ON) hit a double and laterscored on an RBI single by Lawrick,
pushing the score to 6-0.

Inthe top of the seventh, Canada survived a small scare as Puerto
Rico foughtback with three runs, but that was as close as they
would get. The Canadianswere able to hold off the rally for a
6-3 win.

DioneMeier (Saskatoon, SK) pitched the complete game for Canada,
allowing threeearned runs and five hits while walking three and
striking out nine PuertoRican batters.

Bradleypaced Canada with a double and two singles, while McLean
drove in four runswith a home run and a double. Salling, Lawrick,
Marin, Rafter, Erin Gee(Burnaby, BC) and Kristy Odamura (Richmond,
BC) also contributed to the elevenhit attack.

Thesecond game was an excellent pitcher’s duel between Canadian
starter DanielleLawrie (Langley, BC) and Venezuelan pitchers
Johana Gomez and Mariangee Bogado.After seven scoreless innings,
the international tie-breaker rule came intoeffect and each team
started with a runner on second base in the eighth inning.Venezuela
was able to load the bases with two outs after two walks, but
wasunable to score a run. In their half of the inning, Canada
sacrificed ErinCumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) to third and Melanie
Matthews (Surrey, BC) drove inthe only run of the ball game with
an RBI single.

Lawriepitched the full eight innings for Canada, scattering three
hits and four walkswhile striking out seven Venezuelan batters.
Her counterpart Gomez pitched 41/3 innings while only surrendering
two hits and struck out one. Bogado came tothe pitcher’s circle
in relief and pitched three innings giving up the only runof
the game, two hits, a walk and struck out one. The game was highlighted
byseveral outstanding defensive plays.

“Itwas a great ball game from innings one to eight; several double
plays by eachteam kept the game at zeros” stated Head Coach Lori
Sippel after the secondgame. “We had several innings where we
put together great at-bats. We keptchipping away and executed
perfectly in the tie-breaker. Danielle (Lawrie)pitched a great
game and kept giving the team opportunities to win.”

Canadais now 3-0 and will meet the United States (3-0) in the
second semi-final gametomorrow at 3:00pm ET. The winner of that
game will move directly to the GoldMedal game on Saturday, while
the losing team will face the winner of the firstsemi-final game.

JeuxPanaméricains: L’équipe de softball féminin remporte ses
deux matchs 

(Citéde Rock, Brésil) – Après avoir ouvert son tournoi avec une
victoire de 5-2 faceà l’Argentine hier soir, l’équipe Canadienne
a gardé sa fiche de rondepréliminaire parfaite avec des victoires
de 6-3 contre Puerto Rico et de 1-0contre le Venezuela aux Jeux
Panaméricains à Cité de Rock, Brésil.

 Dansla première partie, le Canada a ouvert le pointage en fin
de première manchealors que Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam,
C-B) a cogné un triple et a ensuitemarqué sur une chandelle sacrifice
par Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB). Les femmesont ensuite ajouté
à leur avance avec deux retrait en troisième manchelorsqu’Alison
Bradley (Pinkerton ON) et Noémie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) se sontrendues
sur les sentiers avant qu’Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) a claqué un
coupcircuit de trois points. Plus tard dans la partie, Bradley
a commencé lacinquième manche avec un double et a croisé le marbre
plus tard sur un doublede McLean. Le Canada a été capable d’ajouter
un autre point en sixième manchelorsque Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,
ON) a frappé un double et a été poussé aumarbre plus tard par
un simple du bâton de Lawrick, augmentant l’avance à 6-0. 

Endébut de septième manche, le Canada a été capable de se sortir
d’une petitesituation stressante après qu’ils ont accordé trois
points aux Puerto Rico,mais c’était aussi près que ces derniers
ont venu. Les Canadiennes ont étécapables de tenir leurs adversaires
pour une victoire de 6-3.

DioneMeier (Saskatoon, SK) a lancé le match au complet pour le
Canada, allouant troispoints sur cinq coups sûrs et trois buts
sur balles, tout en retirant neuffrappeurs au bâton.

Bradleya mené l’attaque Canadienne avec un double est deux simples,
alors que McLean aproduit quatre points avec un coup circuit
et un double. Salling, Lawrick,Marin, Rafter, Erin Gee (Burnaby,
C-B) et Kristy Odamura (Richmond, C-B) ontaussi contribuées un
coup sûr chaque à l’attaque offensive.

Ladeuxième partie était un excellent duel des lanceuses entre
Danielle Lawrie(Langley, C-B) du Canada et Johana Gomez et Mariangee
Bogado du Venezuela.Après sept manches complètes sans point,
le règlement de bris d’égalitéinternational a venu en effet alors
que chaque équipe a commencé la huitièmemanche avec une coureuse
au deuxième but. Le Venezuela a été capable de remplirles buts
avec deux retraits après deux buts sur balles, mais elles n’ont
pasété capables de marquer de point. Dans leur moitié de la huitième,
le Canada asacrifié Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) au troisième
but et Melanie Matthews(Surrey, C-B) a produit le seul point
du match avec un simple.

Lawriea lancé les huit manches complètes pour le Canada, espaçant
trois coups sûrs etquatre buts sur balles tout en retirant sept
frappeuses au bâton. Sonadversaire Gomez a lancée 4 1/3 manches
en allouant seulement deux coups sûrset en retirant une Canadienne
sur des prises. Bogado a venu au cercle deslanceurs en relève
et a lancé trois manche en allouant le seul point de lapartie
sur deux coups sûrs et un but sur balles, en retirant un frappeur
aubâton. La partie a été marquée par plusieurs excellents jeux
défensifs. 

 "C’étaitune excellente partie de balle de la première à la huitième
manche; plusieursdoubles jeux par les deux équipes pour garder
le pointage a zéro" aindiqué l’entraîneure-chef Lori Sippel après
la deuxième partie. "On a euplusieurs manche dans lesquels nous
avons produits des excellentes présences aubâton. On a continué
à produire nos chances et on a parfaitement exécuté dansle bris
d’égalité. Danielle (Lawrie) a lancé un excellent match et a
continué àdonner notre équipe une chance à gagner."

LeCanada a maintenant une fiche de 3-0 et rencontrera les États-Unis
(3-0) lorsde la deuxième demi-finale demain après midi à 15:00
(heure de l’Est). Legagnant de cette partie ce méritera une place
lors de la grande finale samedi,alors que l’équipe perdante affrontera
le gagnant de la première demi-finale.
