Elmira Junior Men’s becoming late game threats

SUMMERSIDE PEI - The Elmira Advance Millwright squad is quickly
letting fans and teams at the 2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada
Junior Men’s fast pitch championships know no lead is safe against
them.
And it’s becoming clear they can step it up when called upon
after doing it twice in their first two games here at Very Important
Volunteer Field in Summerside.
The Ontario No. Two squad, who as Midgets won back to back Midget
National titles in 2003-04 in Summerside, used late inning heroics
for a second straight game to come away with a win, this time
5-4 over Nova Scotia reps East Hants Henchmen.
Sunday, Elmira scored the winning run in the seventh in a 3-2
win over Simcoe Wildcats.
Monday, the Ontario No Two entry used just six hits of Nova Scotia
ace Cory Avery to score five runs in the win. East Hants pounded
out 10 hits off Elmira’s Ryan Shannon and Dan Martin.
Jack McLaren (2-3, run scored, two RBI), Ben Wideman (1-4, run
scored, triple), Josh Brohman (1-3, run scored), Ron Dean (1-2,
RBI) and Kris Wright (1-3, two runs scored, walk) were tops.
Steve Grant (1-4, two-run triple), Andy Chase (2-4, home run,
two runs scored), Laurie Isenor (2-3), John Gunn (2-3, run scored,
RBI) and Pat Stewart (2-3) were East Hants’ top hitters. 
Martin earned the win in relief going six and two third innings
allowing one run on seven hits, walking one and fanning seven.
Shannon allowed three runs on three hits while striking out one
in one and one third innings work. 
Avery went the distance allowing four runs on 10 hits walking
three and fanning nine in taking the loss.
Elmira sits at 2-0 after the win while East Hants falls to 0-2.
 
WILDCATS MAUL QUEBEC
The Simcoe Wildcats (Ont 3) made good on their chances with runners
in scoring position Monday afternoon, scoring eight runs on five
hits in an 8-1 five-inning mercy rule defeat of Quebec on field
2 
Chris Kett (1-2, run scored, two run home run), Jeff Bassindale
(1-3, two RBI), Jamie Davis (1-2, two runs scored, stolen base)and
Nathan Fuller (1-2, run scored) led the attack.
Quebec managed just two hits off Simcoe starter Scott Marshall.
Those hits came off Maxime Breton (1-2, run scored) and Mathieu
Lessard (1-2, RBI).
Marshall walked one and fanned one in earning the win.
Pascal Gonthier suffered the loss, allowing five runs on three
hits in one and two third innings, walking two and striking out
one. Mathieu Benoit allowed three runs in two and one third innings
giving up two hits and walking three.
 
 KANE, GOSSE POWER DEFENDING CHAMPS OVER N.B.
A grand slam and three run blast capped off a seven run, third
inning as Kelly’s Pub Canadians of Newfoundland and Labrador
routed New Brunswick representative Miramichi Vics 9-2.
Jon Kane (1-2, grand slam) and Ken Gosse (1-3, three run home
run) each made their at bats in the seven run third count. Justin
Gill (1-4) was the other top player for NL.
New Brunswick got their first two runs of the tournament, scoring
one each in the fourth and fifth innings. The Vics had nine hits
off NL starter Wayne Bruce while NL had just six hits.
Matthew Houcy (1-3, two RBI), Jake O’Neil (2-3), Robert Cogswell
(2-2) and Shane Benjamin (1-3, run scored, triple) did the damage
at the dish.
Bruce went five innings allowing two runs on nine hits and fanning
five for the win. 
Jeremy Regan took the loss allowing seven runs on three hits,
walking four. Brandon Gorman gave up one run on one hit in the
two batters he faced before Benjamin finished it off allowing
a run on two while walking two.
 
WOLVERINES EDGE QUEBEC
Scarborough Wolverine shortstop Nick Dambrosio broke the Quebec
hearts scoring the game winning run on a wild pitch in the top
of the eighth inning as the Ontario champions won 2-1 at the
2007 Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s fast pitch championship.
Scarborough had just three hits off Francis LeClair while Quebec
managed just four of their own in the low scoring, low-hitting
contest.
LeClair was throwing heat in the pitcher’s duel with Wolverine
pitcher Andrew Putham, striking out six on 128 pitches. Putham
threw 105 pitches in the complete game, striking out four while
walking four.
"I feel better pitching when just focused on pitching and not
hitting," Putham said of Chris Lewis taking his spot hitting
for the game. "We just got to go out there and do what we have
and good things will happen."
Brandon Horn (1-2, walk, stolen base), Dale Broadway (1-2, walk,
stolen base) were the other hits.
Quebec hits came from Miguel Mottard (2-3, stolen base, RBI),
J.D. Doucette (1-3, run scored) and Charles Hebert (1-2).Bottom
of the order leads Simcoe
The bottom half of the Simcoe Wildcats lineup did all the damage
early on, resulting in a three run second and then held off the
furious rally by the Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks late in
the game for a closer then expected 5-4 win.
Chris Kett (1-3, run scored), Whitney Bridge (1-3, run scored,
RBI), Kevin Buckley (1-3, RBI) and Brandon Wylie (2-2, sac fly
RBI, double) were the stars to improve Ontario No. Three to 2-1
(won-loss).
Jeremy Kenny (1-3, two run home run), Colby Bierle (2-3, double,
RBI) and Matt King (1-3) had the offensive stats for the D’Backs.
Luke Raymer earned the win, going seven strong innings fanning
10 batters while allowing four runs - two earned - and walking
one.
Colby Bierle went four innings giving up five runs on five hits
and sitting down seven. Kyle Hrycuik went three innings in relief
giving up two hits walking one and fanning four.
