N.L., Sask., Ont. 1 & 2 clinch double life at Junior Men’s championship

SUMMERSIDE - Four teams have clinched double life at the 2007
Causeway Bay Softball Canada Junior Men’s Championship here at
Very Important Volunteer Field in Summerside.
Newfoundland and Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians, Scarborough
Wolverines, Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks and the Elmira Advance
Millwrights.
NL will face Elmira (Ont 2) at 6 p.m. while Scarborough (Ont
1) and Saskatchewan will renew their recent rivalry in the late
playoff game, at 8 p.m. 
The first team to secure double life was the Newfoundland and
Labrador Kelly’s Pub Canadians as they put an exclamation mark
on their perfect performance at this week-long event. 
The Canadians beat Simcoe Wildcats (Ont 3) 1-0 and then beat
the Scarborough Wolverines 7-3. 
Late Thursday night (early Friday morning) in their suspended
game with the Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks, Mark Lewis with
a three run home run and Brad Ezekiel with a solo blast, both
in the fifth inning, rallied the Canadians from a 2-1 deficit
to a 6-3 win to finish round robin at a perfect 8-0.
Jason Hill was the winning pitcher while Kyle Hyrcuik suffered
the loss.
Earlier Thursday night, Newfoundland and Labrador downed the
only other team that could take first place from them, the Ontario
champion Scarborough Wolverines, 7-3 thanks to a three run top
of the seventh.
Ezekiel, who has hit safely in six of 23 at bats driving in four
runs, said it was a relief to get the win and game out of the
way.
"That game was big for us, everyone played well," Ezekiel said.
"When we needed a hit we had someone come through for us."
Canadians coach Ross Crocker said the team held a meeting after
their game Thursday morning, a 1-0 win, after they thought they
hadn’t played well at all.
"We didn’t play well at all this morning and talked about cpoming
out with a better performance tonight," Crocker said. "The players
were all up and everyone did their job to get us the win, led
by Jason Hill’s strong pitching."
Thursday night against Scarborough, Ryan Boland hit a two-run
triple with Sean Cleary and Gary Bruce on second and third. He
hit an 0-1 pitch to centerfield that brought the two runners
home and later he scored himself on a wild pitch.
Cleary (1-1, two runs scored), Brad Ezekiel (2-4, two RBI), Justin
Gill (2-5, run scored, RBI), Steven Pittman (1-1, run scored)
and Stephen Strapp (1-3, RBI) also were tops at the plate.
Brandon Horn (2-3, run scored), Ryan Jaynes (2-3, RBI double),
Nick Dambrosio (2-4) and Andrew Putnam (1-4, run scored, three
strikeouts) had the offensive hits for Scarborough (5-2).
Hill pitched the complete game fanning nine, walking one, giving
up three runs on eight hits.
Matt Leahy suffered the loss, surrendering seven runs on nine
hits, walking four, striking out eight in seven innings of work.
Earlier Thursday, Cleary tossed a complete game, no hitter striking
out 11 in the process as NL edged Simcoe Wildcats (Ont. 3) 1-0.
The only blemish on Cleary’s game was a batter who reached base
in the fourth inning to break up the perfect game.
Ezekiel (1-2) drove home Mark Lewis (1-3) in the bottom of the
fourth with an RBI single for the game’s only run. Boland, Jon
Kane and Gary Bruce each also had a hit a piece.
Luke Raymer suffered the loss striking out nine while surrendering
just five hits.
Simcoe fell to 2-4 with the loss.
D’BACKS GO 2-1
Meanwhile, the Saskatchewan Junior Diamondbacks were on the move,
trying their hardest to come out of day 5 with two wins and a
loss. They got a good start Thursday afternoon against New Brunswick’s
Miramichi Vics.
Colby Bierle pitched a two hitter, Kyle Rivett hit an inside
the park home run and Kinley Sevick blasted a three-run bomb
in the 11-1 mercy rule victory. 
Sevick’s hit a first pitch offering in the second inning, scoring
Kurtis Mugford and Codie Gross.
An inning later, Gross (1-2) hit a three-run double. Jeremy Kenny
(1-2, run scored, tow run double), Matt King (2-3, RBI) and Tyler
Dueck (1-2, RBI, three runs scored).
Jeremy Regan (1-3) and Matt Houcy (1-2) had the N.B. hits.
Shane Benjamin suffered the loss allowing 10 runs on seven hits,
walking three and sitting down one. Brandon Gorman went two and
two third innings in relief.
Saskatchewan improved to 4-2 while the Vics fell to 0-6.
Against Quebec, Colby Bierle blasted two home runs driving in
three and Kyle Hyrcuik hit a two run dinger of his own in the
9-2 five inning win.
Bierle (2-4), Hyrcuik (3-4, two runs scored), Kyle Rivett (2-3,
run scored, two RBI) also were tops.
Jean Daniel Doucet (2-3, RBI, triple) and Steve Savard (1-2,
RBI) had Quebec’s offense.
Brady Woods went five innings surrendering six hits, two runs,
fanning six and walking two.
Pascal Gonthier takes the loss going three and one third inning,
allowing 10 hits and eight runs. Matt Greer faced one batter
allowing one hit before he was injured with a line shot by Barry
Sparvier. Mathieu Benoit came on to mop up.
 
ELMIRA MERCIES P.E.I.
Three triples, a double and a two run home run in a five-run
first inning powered the Elmira Advance Millwrights past P.E.I.

Tim Freeman (2-3, three RBI, triple), Dan Martin (2-2, triple,
two RBI), Ron Dean (2-3, three RBI, two run home run, two runs
scored), Geoff Martin (2-3, two runs scored, double) and Josh
Brohman (2-2, double, two runs scored) led the Elmira battery.
P.E.I. was led by Alex MacDonald (2-2, RBI), Matt Dawson (2-3,
run scored, double) and Ryan Gallant (1-3, run scored).
Dan Martin went two innings for the win, walking one and striking
out one. 
John Veinot went five and two third innings surrendering 10 runs
on 11 hits, walking two and fanning three.
Elmira improved to 4-3 while P.E.I. fell to 3-3.
WILDCATS MERCY N.B.
The Simcoe Wildcats added four runs to their total from a susdpended
game with the Vics to earn a 15-2 five-inning mercy rule victory
Thursday afternoon.
HENCHMEN FINISH AT .500
The East Hants Henchmen reached the .500 mark thanks to a two
hit performance by Steve Thomas and a three run home run by Cory
Avery paced the Nova Scotia reps to an 8-1 mercy rule win Thursday
night.
Pat Stewart (2-3, two RBI) and Jay Duffy (2-2, double, run scored,
two RBI).. John Gunn, Laurie Isenor and Aaron Harvey each had
singles.
Devon Praught (1-2, RBI) drove home Colin Dillon (1-2) with the
lone P.E.I. run in the top of the fifth inning.
Thomas walked one and struck out one in earning the win. Donnelly
Archibald suffered the loss, going three and two third innings
giving up eight runs on eight hits, walking six and sitting down
six. Pierre Richard went one third inning walking one.
East Hants finishes the round robin at 4-4 while P.E.I. sits
at 3-4 with a late game against Quebec (1-6) at midnight.
WOLVERINES TOP WILDCATS 5-2
The Wolverines used a stellar outing from Andrew Putnam en route
to a 5-2 win over the Simcoe Wildcats in late action Thursday
night.
SHANNON FANS 11 IN ELMIRA WIN 
After a shaky first inning, Ryan Shannon settled down to strike
out 11 and surrender four hits in leading his Elmira Advance
Millwright to as 10-3 mercy rule win over the N.B. Vics, who
finish winless at the tournament.
Jamie Rader hit a three run home run, Kris Wright drove in two
runners and Jack McLaren (1-2, two runs scored and RBI ) contributed
in improving Elmira to a final 5-3 round robin record.
Shane Benjamin hit a triple and was followed by a two-run home
run from Jeremy Regan. Robbie Layton then scored after walking,
on a wild pitch.
Benjamin went two thirds of an inning in suffering the loss allowing
eight runs - four earned - on six hits.
New Brunswick finishes at 0-8, and eliminated from further play.
