Edebone makes a comeback
Oneof Australias most courageous and inspirational softball
players of thepast decade is making a comeback to the sport.
After announcing her retirementafter the 2004 Olympic Games,
Peta Edebone will take to the diamond in a newand exciting off-field
position.
Edebonehas been appointed as the new Assistant Coach for the
Victorian OpenWomens team, Titans, led by new head coach Grant
Weir.
Ourteam is in the process of creating a new culture for womens
softball inVictoria and Peta will be an influential driver to
this becoming a reality. Itis extremely exciting to have Peta
back involved with the sport, especiallywith the Titans. The
players are looking forward to learning from someone withher
vast experience and knowledge of the game and to reflect her
winningattitude, said Grant Weir.
Aftera softball career laden with injuries and a passion and
determination sostrong, defying medical odds, the former 1st
base/Outfield and 330game player will take on a new challenging
direction in the sport as the teamprepares for the National Womens
League.
TheTitans, who finished third at last years Australian Open
WomensFastpitch Championship and the 2006/2007 National Womens
League will bestriving to defeat Queensland and New South Wales
who have dominated theAustralian competitions.
Itis a great opportunity for me to return to the softball arena
and contribute tothe development of our Victorian athletes. Hopefully
the experiences andknowledge I have gained throughout my career
can be passed on and be of someassistance to the new generation
of players coming through, said PetaEdebone.
Withthe 2008 Olympic team to still be selected, players will
be looking up to thepast greats experience of having played in
all three Olympic Games and threeWorld Championships.
TheAustralian Open Womens former captain knows all the highs
and lows of asporting career at an elite level. On the eve of
the 1996 Atlanta OlympicGames, Edebone broke her foot in a training
mishap. Metal pins were inserted tohold the bones together and
she took her place as a crucial member of theBronze Medal team.
Edebonewas Victorias sole representative in the Bronze Medal
winning softballteam at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney where,
in an unforgettable game,Edebone dominated the Australian line-up
hitting a two-run homerun in the 13thinning against World No.
1 USA to secure Australias second OlympicBronze Medal.
Edeboneended the nine-day competition with four home runs and
seven RBIs (Runs BattedIn), equalling the Olympic Record for
home runs set by Japans HaruaSaito in Atlanta in 1996.
In2004 Edebone captained the team to Australias first ever Silver
OlympicMedal and soon after, based on medical advice concerning
Peta's long termhealth and physical well being, announced her
retirement from the sport.
Currentlyemployed by the AFL, Peta will dedicate her spare time
to the Titans to helpfurther develop their skills and to help
build softball in the state.
