Canadaearns direct berth in China Cup Gold Medal Game
(Beijing,China) After being shutout twice by Australia in round-robin
play, theCanadian Senior Womens softball team was able to turn
the tables and hand theAustralians their first loss of the tournament.
Canada took advantage of astrong pitching performance by Danielle
Lawrie. (Langley, BC) and got a big hitin the bottom of the six
to earn the 4-0 victory.
Canadascored the first run of the game in the bottom of the first,
when JenniferSalling (Port Coquitlam, BC) stroked an RBI single
up the middle to bring ErinMcLean (Whitby, ON) in to score. The
game then turned into a pitchers duelbetween Canadas Danielle
Lawrie and Australias Zara Mee, as both of themcruised through
the next five innings.
Canadafinally added to its lead in the bottom of the sixth, scoring
three more runson four hits. Erin McLean led off the inning with
a single and was sacrificedto second before Salling reached on
an error. Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) thenconnected with a double
to bring both runner in to score. Alison Bradley(Pinkerton, ON)
then delivered a single to right field to produce Canadasfourth
run of the game.
Bradleyled the Canadians at the plate with two hits and a run
batted in, while Lawrickdelivered the biggest hit, a double that
drove in two runs. McLean, Salling,and Caitlin Lever (Amherst,
New York) each added singles for Canada.
Inthe pitching circle, Lawrie earned the complete game win for
Canada allowingonly two hits and three walks while striking out
twelve Australian hitters.Zara Mee also went the distance for
Australia, allowing four runs (threeearned) on six hits, four
of those hits coming in the bottom of the sixthinning.
Inother action at the China Cup, China defeated Chinese Taipei
in the othersemi-final and later defeated Australia to earn the
right to face Canada in theGold Medal Game tomorrow (5:00am EDT).
