CanadianSoftball Team Opens with Two Wins in Australia

(Blacktown,Australia) – The Senior Women’s National Team opened
their Australian schedulewith a pair of wins yesterday, including
a 3-1 win over the Heatwave, one ofAustralia’s top club teams
which includes some of Australia’s Olympic hopefuls,and a 4-1
win over the Japanese National Team, which is currently ranked
secondin the World.

Inthe first game against the Heatwave, Jennifer Yee (North Delta,
BC) tripled andscored on an error in the bottom of the first
to give Canada an early 1-0 lead.After the Heatwave tied the
game in their half of the fourth, Canada firedright back with
two runs of their own. Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) delivered
anRBI single and later scored on an RBI single by Melanie Matthews
(Surrey, BC).Canadian pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) was
then able to shut down theHeatwave offence for the last three
innings without allowing a hit. Lauren BayRegula (Trail, BC)
started the game in the pitcher’s circle, throwing threescoreless
innings allowing two hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Meierearned the win in relief, allowing one run on two hits and
two walks, strikingout two batters along the way. Rafter also
added a double to round out Canada’sfour hits in the game.

AgainstJapan, Canada needed an extra inning in a hard-fought
contest to pull out the4-1 win. This time, Japan scored the opening
run in the bottom of the firstinning, but was unable to get anything
else going all game long as DanielleLawrie (Langley, BC) earned
a complete game two hitter. Team Canada tied thegame in their
half of the fourth when Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) scored on
afielding error following a single by Jennifer Salling (Port
Coquitlam, BC).After Canada survived a scare in the bottom of
the seventh with two runners onand only one out, they were able
to escape the inning and force the game intoextra innings. 

Thered and white took advantage of this momentum by scoring three
runs in the tophalf of the eighth. Due to the international tie-breaking
rule, Erin McLean(Whitby, ON) started on second base and moved
to third on a sacrifice bunt byJennifer Yee. Megan Timpf then
walked and stole second base to set the tablefor Sheena Lawrick
(Calgary, AB), who delivered a two-run single and thenscored
on a passed ball. After Japan started with a runner on second
and thelead-off hitter reached on a walk, Danielle Lawrie forced
three fly balls tosecure the 4-1 win.

Lawriescattered two hits and five walks over eight innings, and
struck out sevenJapanese hitters. Jennifer Salling led Canada
at the plate with a pair ofsingles, while Jennifer Yee, Melanie
Matthews, Sheena Lawrick and Caitlin Lever(Buffalo, New York)
each added a single of their own.

Canadawill play two more games today as they face the Firestars,
another Australianclub team, and the Chinese National Team.

L’équipecanadienne de softball remporte deux victoires en Australie

(Blacktown,Australie) – L’équipe nationale féminine senior a
commencé son calendrier enAustralie avec une paire de victoires
hier, incluant une victoire de 3-1 faceau Heatwave, une des meilleures
équipes locales en Australie qui inclusequelques aspirantes à
l’équipe Olympique Australienne, ainsi qu’une victoire de4-1
contre l’équipe nationale du Japon, qui est présentement classé
deuxième aumonde.

Lorsde la première partie contre le Heatwave, Jennifer Yee (North
Delta, C-B) acogné un triple et a ensuite croisé le marbre grâce
à une erreur en fin depremière manche pour donner au Canada les
devants, 1 à 0. Après que le Heatwavea égalé la marque dans sa
moitié de la quatrième manche, le Canada aimmédiatement répliqué
avec deux autres points. Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) aproduit
un point avec un simple et a ensuite marqué elle-même sur un
coup sûrde Melanie Matthews (Surrey, C-B). La lanceuse canadienne
Dione Meier(Saskatoon, SK) a ensuite été capable de calmer l’attaque
du Heatwave pour lestrois dernières manches sans allouer un seul
coup sûr. Lauren Bay Regula(Trail, C-B) a commencé la partie
dans le cercle des lanceuses, n’allouant quedeux coups sûrs et
trois buts sur balles en trois manches de travail sansaccorder
un point, tout en retirant six frappeuses sur des prises. Meier
s’estmérité la victoire en relève, accordant un point sur deux
coups sûrs et troispasses gratuites, tout en retirant deux frappeuses
au bâton. Rafter a aussiajouté un double pour compléter l’attaque
canadienne. 

Contrele Japon, le Canada a eu besoin d’une manche supplémentaire
dans une partietrès serrée pour se mériter la victoire de 4 à
1. Cette fois, c’est le Japonqui a marqué le premier point du
match en fin de première manche, mais l’équipen’a pas été capable
de produire quoi que ce soit par la suite alors queDanielle Lawrie
(Langley, C-B) a limité ses opposantes à seulement deux coupssûrs
en huit manches. L’équipe canadienne a créé l’égalité en quatrième
manchelorsque Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) a croisé le marbre
sur une erreur à lasuite d’un coup sûr de Jennifer Salling (Port
Coquitlam, C-B). Après que leCanada a survécu à une menace japonaise
en fin de septième avec deux coureusessur les buts et seulement
un retrait, l’équipe a été capable de s’échapper dela manche
pour forcer une manche supplémentaire.

Lerouge et blanc a pris avantage de la situation en marquant
trois points dansleur moitié de la huitième manche. Grâce au
règlement de bris d’égalitéinternational, Erin McLean (Whitby,
ON) a commencé la manche au deuxièmecoussin et s’est rendu au
troisième sur amorti sacrifice de Jennifer Yee. MeganTimpf s’est
ensuite mérité une passe gratuite et a volé le deuxième but pourdresser
la table pour Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) qui a délivré un simple
dedeux points et a ensuite croisé le marbre sur une balle qui
a échappé à lareceveuse. Après que le Japon a commencé avec une
coureuse au deuxième et laprochaine frappeuse a pris avantage
d’un but sur balles, Danielle Lawrie aforcé les trois prochaines
frappeuses à des chandelles pour sauvegarder lavictoire de 4
à 1.

Lawriea répandu deux coups sûrs et cinq buts sur balles en huit
manches, retirantsept frappeuses japonaises sur des prises. Jennifer
Salling a mené l’attaquecanadienne avec deux coups sûrs, alors
que Jennifer Yee, Melanie Matthews,Sheena Lawrick et Caitlin
Lever (Buffalo, New York) ont chacun ajouté unsimple. 

LeCanada jouera maintenant deux autres parties aujourd’hui face
aux Firestars,une autre équipe locale Australienne, et l’équipe
national de la Chine.
