CanadaRemains Undefeated in Australia

(Blacktown,Australia) – Canada’s Senior Women’s National softball
team continuedits winning ways yesterday by adding two more wins
in the round-robin of theNTC International in Blacktown, Australia.
Canada opened the day with a 3-2 winin extra innings over the
Australian club team Firestars, and later took a 2-0decision
over China to push their tournament record to 4-0.

Inthe win over the Firestars, the Australian fans were treated
to an excellentpitcher’s duel between Australian pitcher Zara
Mee and Canada’s call-up pitcherKatie Rosentreter (Winnipeg,
MB). Canada opened the scoring with a run in thebottom of the
third when Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) scored on a throwingerror.
After the Firestars tied the game in their half of the fourth,
bothpitchers settled down and got right back to work, shutting
down theopposition’s offence to force the game to an extra inning.

Inthe top of the frame, the Firestars took advantage of a fielding
error to scorethe go-ahead run. However, Canada responded in
their own half of the inning asMelanie Matthews (Surrey, BC)
delivered a two-run single with one out to leadthe red and white
to the 3-2 win. Rosentreter pitched all eight innings forCanada,
allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk, retiring
fivehitters on strikes. Matthews and Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,
ON) led Canada at theplate with two hits each, while Erin McLean
(Whitby, ON) added a double.

Inthe second game, Canada took advantage of another strong pitching
performance,this time from Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK), who threw
a complete gameone-hitter against China. Meier faced 22 batters
in the game, only one morethan the minimum of 21 over a seven
inning game. The only hit was a triple tolead off the second
inning, but the Chinese runner was tagged out at home on apassed
ball. Meier also hit a batter in the first and struck out two
Chinesebatters. At the plate, Canada took advantage of a costly
fielding error toscore two runs in the fourth inning. After a
leadoff double, Erin Cumpstone(Saskatoon, SK) scored on the error
on a ball hit by Melanie Matthews. JenniferYee (North Delta,
BC) later drove Matthews in to score, and that was all Canadawould
need. Melanie Matthews and Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam,
BC) eachcollected a pair of hits for Canada, while Erin Cumpstone
and Noemie Marin(Acton Vale, QC) each connected with a double.
Jennifer Yee added a single.

Canadawill now face the Diamonds (3-1) club team from Australia
in their finalround-robin game. With a win, Canada would secure
a berth in the tournamentfinal. However, a loss would potentially
create a three-way tie for first placebetween Canada, the Diamonds,
and Japan (currently 3-1), who will face Chinatonight.

LeCanada toujours invaincu en Australie

(Blacktown,Australie) – L’équipe de softball senior féminine
du Canada a continué à gagnerhier en ajoutant deux autres victoires
en ronde préliminaire du NTCInternational à Blacktown, en Australie.
Le Canada a remporté son premier matchde la journée en méritant
une victoire de 3 à 2 en manches supplémentaires surl’équipe
locale Firestars de l’Australie, et a ensuite gagné 2 à 0 lors
d’unerencontre contre la Chine plus tard dans la journée, améliorant
leur fiche à4-0 au tournoi.

Lorsde la victoire face aux Firestars, les partisans Australiens
ont été traité àune excellente bataille des lanceuses partantes
entre Zara Mee de l’Australieet la lanceuse Katie Rosentreter
(Winnipeg, MB), qui a récemment été rappeléepar l’équipe. Le
Canada a ouvert le pointage avec un point en fin de troisièmemanche
lorsque Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) a croisé le marbre
sur uneerreur. Après que les Firestars ont égalé la marque en
quatrième manche, lesdeux lanceuses se sont rétablies et ont
continué leur excellent travail,limitant l’attaque adverse pour
forcer une manche supplémentaire.

Endébut de la première manche supplémentaire, les Firestars ont
pris avantaged’une erreur pour leur donner les devants, 2 à 1.
Toutefois, le Canada n’a pastardé à répondre, alors que Melanie
Matthews (Surrey, C-B) a délivré un simplede deux points avec
un retrait pour mener le rouge et blanc à la victoire de 3à 2.
Rosentreter à lancé les huit manches au complet pour l’équipe
canadienne,accordant deux points (un mérité) sur cinq coups sûrs
et un but sur balles,retirant cinq frappeuses sur des prises.
Matthews et Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph,ON) ont mené l’attaque canadienne
avec deux coups sûrs chaque, alors que ErinMcLean (Whitby, ON)
a ajouté un double.

Dansla deuxième partie, le Canada a pris avantage d’une autre
excellenteperformance de leur lanceuse partante, cette fois de
la part de Dione Meier(Saskatoon, SK), qui a lancé la partie
au complet en allouant seulement un coupsûr contre la Chine.
Meier a fait face a 22 frappeuses dans la partie,seulement une
de plus que le minimum de 21 dans une partie de sept manches.
Leseul coup sûr était un triple pour commencer la deuxième manche,
mais lacoureuse chinoise a été retirée au marbre sur une balle
qui s’est échappée dela receveuse. Meier a aussi atteint une
frappeuse et a retiré deux frappeuses aubâton. À l’attaque, le
Canada a pris avantage d’une erreur coûteuse pourmarquer deux
points en quatrième manche. Après avoir cogné un double pourcommencer
la manche, Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) a croisé le marbre
surl’erreur sur une balle frappée par Melanie Matthews. Jennifer
Yee (North Delta,C-B) a ensuite poussé Matthews au marbre, et
c’est tout ce cas le Canada a eubesoin. Melanie Matthews et Jennifer
Salling (Port Coquitlam, C-B) ont chacunrécolté deux coups sûrs
pour le Canada, alors qu’Erin Cumpstone et Noemis Marin(Acton
Vale, QC) ont chacun connecté avec un double. Jennifer Yee a
ajouté unsimple.

LeCanada affrontera maintenant une autre équipe locale, les Diamonds
(3-1), lorsde leur dernière partie de la ronde préliminaire.
Avec une victoire, le Canadaserait assuré d’une place en finale.
Toutefois, une défaite pourraitpotentiellement créer l’égalité
pour la première position entre trois équipes,soit le Canada,
les Diamonds et le Japon (présentement 3-1), qui feront face
àla Chine ce soir.
