Canadabounces back with pair of wins in Australia

(Blacktown,Australia) – After suffering a tough 1-0 loss to Australia
early yesterdaymorning, the Canadian Senior Women’s National
softball team bounced back withtwo wins early this morning as
they defeated China 1-0 and earned retributionover Australia
with a 3-1 win at the International Challenge. Canada (4-1)moved
into sole possession of first place, while Japan (2-2), China
(2-3) andAustralia (1-3) continue to battle for second place.
However, many games remainto be played as each team will play
a total of 9 games.

Inthe first game against China, Canada scored a run in the top
of the firstinning and was able to hold on to that lead through
seven innings to earn the1-0 win. The red and white wasted no
time getting on the board, as MelanieMatthews (Surrey, BC) hit
a lead-off double and scored on a single by thirdhitter Jennifer
Yee (North Delta, BC). After giving up back to back hits toChina
in the bottom of the first, starting pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon,
SK)and the Canadian defence settled down by retiring the two
nexthitters, and continued to shut down the Chinese attack until
the seventhinning. With Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) in the
pitching circle in theseventh, China managed to get two runners
on base, but Lawrie struck out thefinal batter to end the game.

MelanieMatthews led the Canadian offence with a double and a
single, while JenniferYee, Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB), Erin
McLean (Whitby, ON) and Kaleigh Rafter(Guelph, ON) all chipped
in with a single. Meier pitched five shutout innings,allowing
three hits and four walks while fanning two Chinese hitters.
DanielleLawrie threw two innings of relief to earn the save and
struck out two batters.Both pitchers were backed by stellar defence,
as Canadian catcher KaleighRafter threw out three runners trying
to steal second base. The infield alsoturned a double play and
was flawless throughout the game, giving Meier andLawrie all
the confidence they needed in the pitcher’s circle.

Canadabuilt on that momentum in the second game against Australia,
and scored tworuns in the top of the seventh to take revenge
on Australia by defeating themby a 3-1 score. Canada opened the
scoring in the second inning Erin Cumpstone(Saskatoon, SK) delivered
an RBI single to bring Jennifer Salling (PortCoquitlam, BC) to
the plate from second base. Australia tied the game 1-1 on asolo
homerun by Australian hitter Stacey Porter to lead off the bottom
of thefourth inning.

AlisonBradley (Pinkerton, ON) led off the seventh inning with
a walk and later stolesecond base before Melanie Matthews delivered
another big RBI double to giveCanada the lead. Matthews later
scored on a fielding error to add an insurancerun, and Canada
would end the game with the 3-1 win.

KatieRosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) started the game in the pitcher’s
circle for Canada,giving up one run on four hits and three walks
in four innings of work. DioneMeier then pitched an inning and
a third of relief, walking three Australianhitters without allowing
a run or a hit. Danielle Lawrie then earned her secondsave of
the day, pitching one and two thirds scoreless innings with twostrikeouts.
The Canadian defence stepped up once again, retiringtwo Australian
runners trying to tag up and consistently retiring lead runnerson
fielder’s choices.

Offensively,Melanie Matthews once again led Canada with a double
and a single, whileJennifer Salling also collected two hits.
Jennifer Yee, Erin Cumpstone, MeganTimpf (Port Dover, ON), and
Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) all added asingle to round
out Canada’s eight hits.

Inother tournament action on Day 2, Japan won a pair of games
as well bydefeating China 3-1 and Australia 5-4, improving their
record to 2-2. Day 3will feature back-to-back games tonight for
Canada as they will face China(9:00pm EST) and Japan (11:30pm

LeCanada rebondit avec deux victoires en Australie

(Blacktown,Australie) – Après avoir subi une défaite de 1 à 0
face à l’Australie tôt hiermatin, l’équipe nationale féminine
senior de softball du Canada a rebondit avecdeux victoires tôt
ce matin alors qu’elle a blanchi la Chine 1 à 0 avant deprendre
leur revanche sur l’Australie en remportant un gain de 3 à 1
auChallenge International. Le Canada (4-1) a grimpé au sommet
du classement dutournoi, alors que le Japon (2-2), la Chine (2-3)
et l’Australie (1-3)continuent à se battre pour la deuxième position.
Toutefois, plusieurs partiesn’ont pas encore été joué, alors
que chaque équipe jouera un total de 9 matchs.

Dansla première partie contre la Chine, le Canada a marqué un
point en début depremière manche et a été capable de tenir cette
avance pour sept manches pourse mériter la victoire de 1 à 0.
Le rouge et blanc n’a pas perdu de temps às’afficher sur le tableau
de pointage, alors que la première frappeuse MelanieMatthews
(Surrey, C-B) a cogné un double et a croisé le marbre sur un
simple dela troisième frappeuse Jennifer Yee (North Delta, C-B).
Après avoir accordédeux coups sûrs de suite à la Chine en fin
de première manche, la lanceusepartante Dione Meier (Saskatoon,
SK) et la défensive canadienne se sont calmerpour retirer les
deux prochaines frappeuses, et ont continué à garder lesbâtons
chinois silencieux jusqu’à la septième manche. Avec Danielle
Lawrie(Langley, C-B) maintenant dans le cercle des lanceuses
en septième, la Chine aété capable de mettre deux coureuses sur
les buts, mais Lawrie a retiré ladernière frappeuse sur des prises
pour finir la partie.

MelanieMatthews a mené l’attaque canadienne avec un double et
un simple, alors queJennifer Yee, Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB),
Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) et KaleighRafter (Guelph, ON) ont tous
contribué des simples. Meier a lancé cinq manchessans point,
accordant trois maigres coups sûrs et quatre buts sur balles
touten retirant deux frappeuses chinoises sur des prises. Danielle
Lawrie a lancédeux manches en relève pour se mériter le sauvetage
avec deux retraits aubâton. Les deux lanceuses ont été grandement
aidé par du jeu défensifspectaculaire, alors que la receveuse
canadienne Kaleigh Rafter a retiré troiscoureuses essayant de
voler le deuxième but. Le champ intérieur a aussi tournéun double
jeu et a joué sans failles tout au long de la partie, ce qui
a donnétoute la confiance nécessaire à Meier et Lawrie dans le
cercle des lanceuses.

LeCanada a bâtit sur cet élan dans la deuxième partie contre
l’Australie, et amarqué deux fois en début de septième manche
pour prendre sa revanche surl’Australie par la marque de 3 à
1. Le Canada a ouvert le pointage en deuxièmemanche lorsqu’Erin
Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) a délivré un simple pour pousserJennifer
Salling (Port Coquitlam, C-B) au marbre du deuxième coussin.L’Australie
a égalé la marque 1 à 1 sur un coup circuit du bâton de lafrappeuse
Australienne Stacey Porter, la toute première frappeuse de laquatrième
manche.

AlisonBradley (Pinkerton, ON) a commencé la septième manche en
forçant une passegratuite, et a plus tard volé le deuxième but
avant que Melanie Matthews adélivré un autre gros double pour
donner les devants au Canada. Matthews aensuite marqué elle-même
sur une erreur pour ajouter un point d’assurance, etle Canada
a fini la partie avec la victoire de 3 à 1.

KatieRosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) a commencé la partie dans le
cercle des lanceusespour le Canada, accordant un point sur quatre
coups sûrs et trois buts surballes en quatre manches de travail.
Dione Meier a ensuite lancé une manche etun tiers de relève,
allouant trois passes gratuites sans donner de point ou decoup
sûr. Danielle Lawrie s’est ensuite mérité son deuxième sauvetage
de lajournée, lançant une manche et deux tiers avec deux retraits
au bâton. Ladéfensive canadienne s’est présentée encore une fois,
retirant deux coureusesAustraliennes essayant de prendre un but
sur des chandelles et en retirant descoureuses de façon constante
sur des choix des voltigeuses. 

l’offensive, Melanie Matthews a encore une fois mené l’attaque
avec un doubleet un simple, alors que Jennifer Salling a elle
aussi produit deux coups sûrs.Jennifer Yee, Erin Cumpstone, Megan
Timps (Port Dover, ON) et Caitlin Lever(Buffalo, New York) ont
tous ajouté un simple pour compléter les huit coupssûrs canadiens.
