Canadawill play for Gold in Australia

(Blacktown,Australia) – The Senior Women’s National softball
team earned a berth in theGold Medal Game of the International
Challenge early this morning after theydefeated Japan by a score
of 5-2. With the win, the Canadian team improved itsrecord to
6-2 and clinched first place in round robin play. Japan (4-4),
China(3-5) and Australia (3-5) continue to battle with each other
to determine whowill meet Canada in Sunday’s final.

Canadacame out of the gate flying in the win against Japan, scoring
three runs in thetop of the first inning. After Canada loaded
the bases with two outs, AlisonBradley (Pinkerton, ON) smashed
a triple to clear the bases, pushing MelanieMatthews (Surrey,
BC), Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) and Sheena Lawrick(Calgary,
AB) in to score. Japan chipped at the lead with a run in the
bottomof the second on an error, but Canada immediately responded
in the top half ofthe third when Bradley drove in her fourth
run of the game with an RBI singleto restore the three run lead.
Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) also delivereda solo homerun
in the fourth. Japan added another single run on an error in
thefifth, but that was as close as they would get, as Katie Rosentreter
(Winnipeg,MB) and Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK) combined in the
pitcher’s circle to allowonly three hits.

Rosentreterstarted the game and pitched four and one third innings,
allowing two unearnedruns on two hits and two strikeouts. Meier
came on in relief in the fifthinning, allowing only one hit and
also struck out two batters in two and twothird innings of work.

AlisonBradley was the big hitter for Canada, driving in four
runs on a triple and a single.Caitlin Lever also cracked her
first homerun in international play. MelanieMatthews and Jennifer
Yee each had a pair of singles, while Erin McLean(Whitby, ON)
chipped in with a single.

Alsoon Day 4 of the International Challenge, Australia lost two
tough games, thefirst by a 5-1 score against China and the second
by a 2-1 setback to Japan. Onthe final day of round robin play,
Canada (6-2) will face Australia (3-5) at11:00pm EST tonight
and Japan (4-4) will meet China (3-5) at 1:30am EST. Thetournament
final will then be played at 4:00am EST.

LeCanada jouera pour l’or en Australie

(Blacktown,Australie) – L’équipe nationale féminine senior de
softball du Canada s’estmérité une place en grande finale du
Challenge International tôt ce matin aprèsavoir remporté une
victoire de 5 à 2 face au Japon. Avec la victoire, l’équipecanadienne
a amélioré sa fiche à 6-2 tout en s’assurant de la première positionen
ronde préliminaire. Le Japon (4-4), la Chine (3-5) et l’Australie
(3-5)continuent à se battre pour décider qui affrontera le Canada
en grande finaledimanche.

LeCanada est sorti en force lors de la victoire contre le Japon
en marquant troispoint en début de première manche. Après que
le Canada a rempli les coussinsavec deux retraits, Alison Bradley
(Pinkerton, ON) a cogné un gros triple pourvider les buts, poussant
Melanie Matthews (Surrey, C-B), Jennifer Yee (NorthDelta, C-B)
et Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) au marbre. Le Japon a réduitl’écart
avec un point marqué sur une erreur en fin de deuxième manche,
mais leCanada a immédiatement répliqué en début de troisième
lorsque Bradley a produitson quatrième point de la rencontre
avec un simple. Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, NewYork) a aussi claqué
un coup circuit en quatrième. Le Japon a ajouté un autrepoint
sur une erreur en cinquième, mais c’est le plus près qu’ils ont
venu,alors que Katie Rosentreter (Winnipeg, MB) et Dione Meier
(Saskatoon, SK) ontcombiné leurs efforts dans le cercle des lanceuses
en accordant seulement troiscoups sûrs.

Rosentreterétait la lanceuse partante et a lancé quatre manches
et un tiers, accordantdeux points non-mérités sur deux coups
sûrs et deux retraits au bâton. Meierest venue en relève en cinquième
manche, allouant qu’un seul coup sûr avec deuxretraits sur des
prises en deux et deux tiers manches de travail.

AlisonBradley était la joueuse clé à l’offensive avec quatre
points produits sur untriple et un simple. Caitlin Lever a aussi
claqué son premier circuit encompétition internationale. Melanie
Matthews et Jennifer Yee ont chacun ajoutéune paire de simples,
alors qu’Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) a contribué un simple.

Aussilors de la quatrième journée du Challenge International,
l’Australie s’estincliné à deux reprises, la première une défaite
de 5 à 1 contre la Chine et ladeuxième un échec de 2 à 1 face
au Japon. Lors de la dernière journée de laronde préliminaire,
le Canada (6-2) affrontera l’Australie (4-4) à 23:00 HNE cesoir
et le Japon (4-4) se mesurera à la Chine (3-5) à 1:30 HNE tôt
demainmatin. La grande finale sera jouée à 4:00 HNE.
