Canada loses 7-5 against China in Oklahoma City

 

(Oklahoma City, OK) – The Canadian Senior Women’s NationalSoftball
Team dropped a tight 7-5 decision to the Chinese National Team
lastnight at the OKC Olympic Preview in Oklahoma City, OK. After
falling behind 4-0early, the Canadian squad fought back the entire
game, but was unable to takethe lead.

 

China opened the scoring in the top of the second inning,taking
advantage of three hits and a Canadian error to push three runs
in toscore. After China added a fourth run on a run-scoring groundout
in the third,Canada’s bats woke up in the bottom of the inning.
Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon,SK) led off with a single, followed
by a walk by Noemie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC)and another walk two
batters later by Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) to loadthe bases
with two outs. Jennifer Salling (Port Coquitlam, BC) then connectedwith
a clutch two-run single up the middle to cut the lead in half,
and SheenaLawrick (Calgary, AB) followed suit with a two-run
single of her own, and thegame was quickly tied 4-4.

 

China bounced back the following inning, scoring two runs inthe
top of the fourth, but Canada was able to produce a run of their
own afterMelanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) walked and stole second,
then scored on a singleby Erin McLean (Whitby, ON). That was
as close as Canada was get, as Chinawould add another run in
the sixth and held on for the 7-5 win.

 

“Five runs should be enough to win but our defenceplayed below
par” remarked Head Coach Lori Sippel after the game. “This
was ourfirst game since March 17th and the rust showed. We will
need toplay better defensively against the United States today.”

 

Canadian starting pitcher Dione Meier (Saskatoon, SK)allowed
six runs (three earned) on seven hits and only one walk in threeinnings
and a third of work. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) threw three
inningsand two thirds of relief, allowing only one run on seven
hits. The Chinesehitters were systematic at putting the ball
in play, as both Canadian pitcherscombined for only one strikeout
over seven innings (by Lawrie).

 

At the plate, Canada took advantage of three timely hits bySalling,
Lawrick and McLean to score all five runs. McLean led the team
with adouble and a single, while Cumpstone also chipped in with
a single to completeCanada’s five-hit attack.

 

Canada will now face the United States this afternoon(2:30pm
CDT, ESPN), a game that can be followed through GameTracker on

Le Canada perd 7-5 face à la Chine à Oklahoma City

 

(Oklahoma City, OK) – L’équipe nationale desoftball féminine
senior du Canada a échappé une décision de 7-5 face à l’équipe
nationale chinoise hier soir au tournoi OKC Pré-Olympique Ã
 OklahomaCity, OK. Après avoir tombé de l’arrière 4 à 0
tôt dans la partie, la formationcanadienne à batailler fort
pour revenir, mais n’a pas été capable de revenir.

 

La Chine a ouvert le pointage en début dedeuxième manche en
prenant avantage de trois coups sûrs et une erreur du Canadapour
pousser trois coureuses au marbre. Après que la Chine a ajouté
unquatrième point sur un roulant en troisième, l’attaque
canadienne s’estréveillée en fin de manche. Erin Cumpstone
(Saskatoon, SK) a commencé la mancheavec un simple, suivi d’un
but accordé à Noémie Marin (Acton-Vale, QC) et d’unautre
but sur balle deux frappeuses plus tard à Jennifer Yee (North
Delta, C-B)pour remplir les coussins avec deux retraits. Jennifer
Salling (Port Coquitlam,C-B) a ensuite cogné un simple de deux
points clé pour réduire l’écart enmoitié, et Sheena Lawrick
(Calgary, AB) a fait de même avec un simple de deuxpoints de
sa part, et la partie était soudainement à l’égalité, 4
à 4.

 

La Chine a rebondi la manche suivante enmarquant deux points
en début de quatrième, mais le Canada a été capable derépliquer
avec un point lorsque Melanie Matthews (Surrey, C-B) a été
accordé lepremier but, a volé le deuxième, et a ensuite marqué
sur un simple d’ErinMcLean (Whitby, ON). Toutefois, c’est
le plus près que le Canada est venu,alors que la Chine a ajouté
un autre point en sixième pour finalement remporterla partie
7 Ã  5.

 

« Cinq points devraient être assezpour gagner, mais notre défensive
a joué en dessous de la moyenne » aremarqué Lori Sippel, entraîneuse
chef, après la partie. « C’était notrepremière partie depuis
le 17 mars et la rouille s’est démontré. Il va falloirmieux
jouer en défensive aujourd’hui face aux États-Unis. » 

 

La lanceuse partante canadienne Dione Meier(Saskatoon, SK) a
accordé six points (trois mérités) sur sept coups sûrs etseulement
une passe gratuite dans trois manches et u n tiers de travail.Danielle
Lawrie (Langley, C-B) a lancé trois manches et deux tiers de
relève,accordant seulement un point sur sept coups sûrs. Les
frappeuses chinoises ontsystématiquement mis le bâton sur la
balle, alors que les deux lanceusescanadiennes ont seulement
retiré une frappeuse sur des prises combinées (parLawrie).

 

À l’attaque, le Canada a pris avantage detrois coups sûrs
clés par Salling, Lawrick et McLean pour produire tous lescinq
points. McLean a mené l’équipe avec un double et un simple,
alors queCumpstone a aussi ajouté un simple pour compléter
l’attaque de cinq coupssûrs.  

 

Le Canada rencontrera maintenant lesÉtats-Unis cette après-midi
(14:30 Heure Centrale, ESPN), une partie qui peutêtre suivie
