Canada and Akron split Pro Tourdoubleheader
(Akron, OH) The Senior WomensNational Team squared off against
the Akron Racers in back-to-back gamesyesterday to compensate
for a rainout on June 26th. In its eleventhgame on the Pro Tour,
Team Canada managed to outscore the Racers 6-2, butdropped a
close 1-0 decision later that afternoon at Firestone Stadium.
In the first of the two games the Senior Women weredetermined
to gather as many runs as possible from the get-go. Jennifer
Yee(North Delta, BC), who has been a solid presence for Canada
over the course ofthe tournament, made no mistake, as she registered
another homerun. However, the eager Racers retaliated with one
run of their own, balancing the score at1-1 after the first inning.
In the second, Alison Bradley (Pinkerton, ON) drew awalk, stole
second and advanced to third on a wild pitch before being broughthome
by teammate, Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK). Immediately following, with
Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) and Kristy Odamura (Richmond, BC)
on base,Kaleigh Rafter sent one over the fence to make it 4-0
for Canada.
The final run for each team came in the fourth inning ofplay,
when Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) homered and when Akrons SusanOgden
was batted in on a drive to left field.
In Canadas 6-2 victory, Danielle Lawrie andRobin Mackin (Newmarket,
ON) combined for two strikeouts and allowed only sevenhits for
25 at bats. Rafter also stood out with a homerun and three RBIs.
Unfortunately, things didnt run as smoothly in thesecond showing
for the Senior Women, who lost a tight 1-0 game to the Racersthat
very afternoon. The fourth game of the series was a battle of
endurance,but also pitching.
Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, BC) discouraged theRacers offense
with ten strikeouts, while Lawrie, added four more of herown
in the final inning. Nonetheless, Angel Shamblinwas equally steadfast
for Akron and Canadas battersstruggled to get on base for the
duration of the game. The soleRacers run came in the second inning
on a homerun by Veronica Wootson and wouldbe sufficient enough
to secure the win.
The Pro Tour wraps up today June 29, 2008 at 10:05a.m. and 2:05p.m.
CDT with another doubleheader.
