Canadakeeps rolling in playoff games at the Canada Cup

 

(Surrey,BC) - Yesterday was the start of the double elimination
portion of the CanadaCup.  

Witheight teams moving on to the playoffs the pools crossed over
to play opponentsfrom the other pool in the first round.  Canada’s
Senior Women’s NationalTeam played the Washington Absolute Blast.

 

ErinMcLean (Whitby, ON) started things off for the red and white
with a homerun toleft centerfield in the bottom of the first
inning. After that, things werequiet up until the fourth inning
when Jennifer Yee (North Delta, BC) drew aleadoff walk and was
driven in on a homerun by Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) toright
field.  Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) later drove in Megan Timpf(Port
Dover, ON) to bring in the fourth Canadian run.

 

Thiswas all the home side would need to secure the win.  Lauren
Bay Regula(Trail, BC) was in the pitcher’s circle for Canada
and finished the game givingup just two hits and striking out
fifteen Blast hitters. The final score wasCanada 4, Absolute
Blast 0.

Inthe second game of the day, Canada took on Chinese Taipei.
The winner of thisgame would go through to the semi-final on
Saturday night at 6:30pm PDT.

 

Itwas a bit of a bit of a quiet start for both teams, with the
defense takingcontrol early.  In the third inning Canada led
off with a hit by CaitlinLever (Buffalo, New York) and then Erin
Mclean, Jennifer Yee, Jennifer Salling(Port Coquitlam, BC) and
Sheena Lawrick all followed suit to score three runson the inning.
 After Taipei came back and scored three runs in the bottomof
the fourth inning to tie the game at 3-3, Team Canada went back
on theoffensive.  Melanie Matthews hit a leadoff homerun in the
top of the fifthfollowed by a single by Mclean and homerun by
Jennifer Salling to score anotherthree runs.  Not quite done
yet, in the top of the seventh inning, Canadawas able to send
a couple more insurance runs across the plate with a single byYee,
a double by Salling to score Yee and then a single by Lawrick
to scoreSalling.

 

Canadakept Taipei off the scoring sheet for the remainder of
the game to take the 8-3win. Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) went
four innings giving up three hits whilestriking out four Taipei
batters.  Robin Mackin (Newmarket, ON) came in topitch to the
last twelve hitters.

 

Nextup for Canada in the double elimination format, is a match-up
of undefeatedteams when Canada takes on Japan at 6:30pm PDT at
