Canadaearns bronze medal at the Canada Cup

(Surrey,BC) - It took a couple of the world’s best pitchers to
keep the Canadian teamfrom moving on to the finals of the 2008
Canada Cup. After losing Saturdaynight to the hardest thrower
in the world in Yukiko Ueno for Japan, Canada wasput into the
position of needing a win to move on to the finals. Australia
cameout with everything they had by starting Melanie Roche in
the circle, arguablyone of the best pitchers in the world.

Afteran early walk and homerun by Stacey Porter in the first
inning, the pitchersand defense took over for a couple of innings.

Aninsurance run was scored by the Australian team in the top
of the fourthinning.  Team Canada got on the board in the fifth
with a leadoff hit byCaitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) followed
by a triple to left field by MelanieMatthews (Surrey, BC). A
few more chances came to the Canadians in the sixthand seventh
innings but the red and white was unable to score, giving Australiathe
3-1 win.

CaitlinLever went three-for-three while Jennifer Yee (North Delta,
BC) and MelanieMatthews each contributed two hits. Jennifer Salling
(Port Coquitlam, BC) alsoadded a hit on the night.

Settlingin after the first inning, Danielle Lawrie (Langley,
BC) had a strong outingfor the Canadians, pitching five complete
innings giving up just two hits whilestriking out six.  Lauren
Bay Regula (Trail, BC) came in for the final twoinnings, striking
out four of the eight batters she faced.

JenniferYee, Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) and Melanie Matthews were
all selected to theAll-Star team as a result of their performance
in the round robin portion ofthe tournament.  Jennifer Yee was
also the recipient of the top hitteraward presented after the
final game of the tournament.

Inthe Championship game, Team Japan beat Australia 4-2 to take
the 2008 CanadaCup title.  Canada travels to Japan on Tuesday
for training, exhibitiongames and final preparations for the
Beijing Olympics, which will be playedfrom August 12-21.

Le Canada se mérite la médaille de bronze à la Coupedu Canada

(Surrey, C-B) – Il a fallu deux des meilleures lanceusesau monde
pour arrêter le Canada d’avancer à la finale de la Coupe du Canada2008.
Après avoir perdu samedi soir face à la lanceuse la plus rapide
au monde,Yukiko Ueno du Japon, le Canada avait besoin d’une victoire
contre l’Australiepour se rendre en finale. L’Australie est sortie
avec tout ce qu’elles avaienten plaçant Melanie Roche dans le
cercle des lanceuses, une autre parmi lesmeilleures lanceuses
au monde.

Après un but sur balle et un circuit par StaceyPorter tôt en
première manche, les lanceuses et la défensive ont pris lavedette
pour quelques manches.

L’équipe australienne a ajouté un point d’assuranceen début de
quatrième. Le Canada s’est enfin inscrit au pointage en cinquièmelorsque
Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) a commencé la manche avec un
simplesuivi d’un triple par Melanie Matthews (Surrey, C-B). Quelques
autres chancesont venu pour le Canada en sixième et septième
manches, mais le rouge et blanca été incapable de marquer, donnant
à l’Australie une victoire de 3 à 1.

Caitlin Leverétait trois-en-trois alors que Jennifer Yee (North
Delta, C-B) et MelanieMatthews ont chacun contribué deux coups
sûrs. Jennifer Salling (PortCoquitlam, C-B) a aussi ajouté un
simple.

Après lapremière manche, Danielle Lawrie (Langley, C-B) a bien
lancé pour le Canada,lançant cinq manches complètes en accordant
seulement deux coups sûrs etretirant six frappeuses sur des prises.
Lauren Bay Regula (Trail, C-B) estvenue en relève pour les deux
dernières manches, retirant quatre frappeuses surhuit au bâton.

Jennifer Yee,Erin McLean (Whitby, ON) et Melanie Matthews ont
toutes été sélectionnées àl’équipe Toute-Étoile comme résultats
de leur performance lors de la rondepréliminaire du tournoi.
Jennifer Yee a aussi reçu le prix de meilleure frappeuse,ce qui
a été présenté après la grande finale.

En grande finaledu tournoi, le Japon a défait l’Australie 4 à
2 pour se mériter le Championnatde la Coupe du Canada 2008. Le
Canada voyagera au Japon ce mardi pour del’entraînement, des
parties hors-concours et les préparations finales pour lesOlympiques
de Pékin, qui auront lieu du 12 au 21 août.
