CanadianSoftball Team Opens Olympic Games with 6-1 Win

(Beijing,China) – The Canadian Olympic softball team began on
a high note this morning, defeating Chinese Taipei 6-1 in the
opening game of the eight-team tournament.Lauren Bay Regula (Trail,
BC) threw five scoreless innings, while Megan Timpf(Port Dover,
ON) drove in three runs to pace the Canadian bats to victory.

Canadaopened the scoring in the top of the second inning. Jennifer
Salling (PortCoquitlam, BC) led off with a single to left field,
and scored on an RBI doubleby Timpf just inside the third baseline
in left field. Timpf later scored on astrange play, as the Taipei
third baseman blocked a ground ball and tried totoss the ball
to the shortstop covering third base to catch Timpf off guard, but
the ball sailed over the shortstop’s head, allowing Timpf to
cross theplate.

Inthe top of the third, Canada kept the bats going as Salling
and Jennifer Yee(North Delta, BC) hit back-to-back singles before
Timpf delivered a two-out,two-run single up the middle, increasing
the lead to 4-0. Canada completed itsscoring in the top of the
sixth. Timpf led off with her third hit of the game,Alison Bradley
(Pinkerton, ON) then reached on an error, and both runners movedup
on a wild pitch before Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) drove a
pitch up themiddle to push Timpf in to score. Caitlin Lever (Buffalo,
New York) thenfollowed with an RBI single of her own to score
Bradley from third.

Thelone Taipei run came in the bottom of the seventh with two
outs, as RobinMackin (Newmarket, ON) grooved a pitch in the middle
of the strike zone thatwas smacked just over the left field fence
for a homerun, one of only two hitsfor the Taipei batters.

LaurenBay Regula was fantastic in the pitcher’s circle, allowing
only one hit in fiveinnings of scoreless work. Despite the fact
that the Taipei hitters fouled offmany pitches in the batter’s
box, Regula still managed to register eight strikeouts, and also
walked five batters. Robin Mackin pitched the two final innings
inrelief, allowing only the solo homerun and striking out a pair
of batters.

Timpfwas the offensive leader for Canada with three hits, a walk
and three runsbatted in, while Salling also collected three hits.
Lever added two singles, while Cumpstone, Yee and Erin McLean
(Whitby, ON) each chipped in with singlesof their own.
