Canada racks up two more wins at World Softball Championship

(Caracas, Venezuela) The Canadian Women's National Softball team
notched two more victories on Saturday, shutting out Great Britain
(1-3) by a score of 7-0 and Argentina (1-3) by a12-0 score. With
those two wins, Canada improved its record to 4-0, setting up
a battle of undefeated teams against Japan (4-0) on Sunday at
3:30pm EDT.

Against Great Britain, Canada opened the scoring in the second
inning as Victoria Hayward (Mountain View, California) hit an
infield single and scored on a double down the first base line
by Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC). Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) followed
that with an infield single and Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) walked
to load up the bases, and both Matthews and Lye crossed the plate
on a passed ball and a wild pitch.

Canada added to its lead in the third inning, when Heather Ebert
(Rosthern, SK) drove in Jill Russell (London, ON) with a double.
The next inning, Jenn Yee blasted a solo homerun - her third
in as many games - which was followed by a double to left field
by Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB). Jen Salling (Port Coquitlam,
BC) then pushed Lawrick in to score with a single.

Canada completed the run-ahead rule victory in the fifth, as
Ebert walked, advanced to third on a pair of groundouts by Hayward
and Matthews, and scored on a single by Lye.

Starting pitcher Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg, MB) was dominant in the
pitcher's circle, throwing five innings of no-hit ball while
striking out seven batters and allowing one walk.

In its second game of the day against Argentina - a game that
had been postponed Friday night and re-scheduled for Saturday
- the Canadian bats stayed hot and Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON)
allowed only three hits over four innings to shut down the Argentinean
offence. Canada put up ten runs in the first inning, led by Caitlin
Lever (Buffalo, New York) who notched two hits, two runs and
three runs batted in, while Kaleigh Rafter (Guelph, ON) added
a double and a single to drive in three more runs. Jill Russell
also chipped in with two hits, a run and an RBI.

Canada added two more runs in the third to complete the scoring,
with the game ending on the run-ahead rule after four innings.
Caira struck out three and allowed three walks.
