KFC World Cup of Softball V - Bronze Medal Game

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 26, 2010

Canada finishes fourth at KFC World Cup of Softball V

(Oklahoma City, OK) The Canadian Women's National Team fought
hard, but a big seventh inning led the United States Futures
National Team to a 9-3 win. The teams were tied 3-3 after six
innings before the Futures took advantage of an error and got
things rolling to win the Bronze medal at the KFC World Cup of
Softball V. It was the last game of the 2010 season for Canada,
who started the summer on a high note by winning the Bronze medal
at the 2010 ISF XII Women's World Championship in Caracas, Venezuela
earlier this month.

The USA Futures opened the scoring in the top of the second inning,
as they loaded the bases and forced a two-out walk to give them
an early 1-0 lead. Canada came back to tie the game in the bottom
half of the third, when Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) was hit
by a pitch, advanced to second on a passed ball and to third
on a fielder's choice. She then raced in to score on a wild pitch.

Both pitchers held the opposing bat silent until the top of the
sixth inning, when Valerie Arioto led off the inning with a solo
homerun to give the USA Futures a 2-1 lead. Megan Langenfeld
followed that with a double, and pinch runner Jamia Reid later
scored on a single by Jenae Leles, forcing Canadian starting
pitcher Danielle Lawrie (Langley, BC) out of the game. However,
the Canadian bats responded in the bottom half of the inning.
Caitlin Lever (Buffalo, New York) and Jenn Yee (North Delta,
BC) started the inning with singles, and were sacrificed forward
by Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB). Jen Salling (Port Coquitlam,
BC) then hit an RBI groundout to second base, and Yee scored
on a passed ball to tie the game.

Things then unraveled for Canada in the top of the seventh. The
Futures loaded the bases with one out on an error, a walk and
an infield single before Jenae Leles singled up the middle to
drive in two runs, followed by an RBI single by Rave Chavanne.
After a walk loaded the bases again, Canada was able to get the
second out on a force out to home, but Brittany Lastrapes was
walked to bring a run in, and Molly Johnson hit a two-run single
to left to increase the lead to 9-3.Canada was retired in order
in the bottom of the seventh to cap off their season.

Danielle Lawrie allowed three runs on six hits to go along with
six strikeouts in five and a third innings pitched, while Jenna
Caira (Toronto, ON) took the tough loss by allowing five runs
(only one earned) on three hits in one inning. Ashley Lanz (Winnipeg,
MB) notched the two last outs, allowing one unearned run on two
hits.

At the plate, Canada only managed three hits off American pitcher
Jordan Taylor, as Melanie Matthews, Caitlin Lever and Jennifer
Yee each had a single. Taylor struck out seven to earn the win
in the pitcher's circle.
