>                                                       Two exciting
quarter final matches were played Wednesday night in Whitefish
. In the opener the Whitefish Lake First Nation Steelers took
on the Garson Hounds in the third and deciding game of their
best of three affair . The Garson Hounds took a 4-1 lead going
into the 5th frame and seemed well on their way to a victory
and the series but then the young bucks from Whitefish never
gave up coming up with  two runs in the fifth and one more in
the 7th to send the game into extra innings . In the extra frame
the Steelers scored three runs and held on for a 7-5 victory
and a 2-1 series win . Danny Nootchtai started for the Steelers
and later gave up to Henry Nootchtai with the veteran Al Guenette
coming in to close in the 6th,7th and 8th inning preserving the
win . All three pitchers combined to give up 5 runs (3 earned)
on 8 hits while striking out  6 batters and  issuing one base
on balls .Gary Lamothe (1-2) went the distance for the Hounds
losing his second of the playoffs in giving up 7 runs ( 4 earned)
on 11 hits while fanning 3 batters and issuing  one base on balls
.  Syd Nebenionquit led the Steelers with a 2 for 4 performance
(double) while Dan Quesnel hit 3 for 4 in a losing cause for
the Hounds .
>                                                        In the
nightcap , more excitement was coming . Pickerel River led all
the way against the Parry Island Hawks  with a 4-1 lead  coming
to the fifth inning when Matt Tobobondung sat on a hanging inside
rise ball and put over the right field fence for a three run
homer and a tie game . The Cardinals did not recover as the Hawks
scored two more in the seventh and hung on for a 6-4 victory
and  a 2-0 series win . Percy Tobobondung (0-0) started for the
Hawks but gave way to Matt Tobobondung (2-0) who picked up his
second victory of the playoffs .Both pitchers combined to give
up four runs ( all earned ) on 4 hits (Matt did not give up a
hit once he took over ) while striking out 10 batters and issuing
5 base on balls ..Jonathan Contin (0-2) went the distance in
suffering his second loss of the playoffs in giving up 6 runs
( 4 earned) on 9 hits while striking out 8 batters and issuing
one base on balls . Matt Tobobondung led all hitters going 2
for 4 (run scored , 3 run homer) with teammate Craig Brown also
hitting 2 for 4  while Earl Contin hit 1 for 2 in a losing cause
for the Cardinals .
>                                                          The
semi finals also best of three series will open up on Monday
August the 23rd in Azilda at the Rick McDonald Memorial Park
.In series "C" starting at 7 PM the Garson Hounds will face the
Sudbury North Stars and at 9 PM under the lights it will be series
"D" with the Whitefish Latke Steelers taking on the Parry Island
Hawks

forget this coming weekend the 5th Annual Northern Ontario Fastball
Championship in Azilda .Special ceremony at 6:30 Pm honoring
our lost friend Brad Rienguette followed the recognition of our
former legends of fastball .The games get underway at 7 PM
