OSHAWA, Ont. - Durham Colleges Erin Dewey was named the Ontario
Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) womens fastball player
of the year for the third consecutive season in a ceremony held
at the Holiday Inn Hotel and Conference Centre in Oshawa, Ont.
on Thursday evening.
The Port Hope, Ont., native posted a .677 batting average, scoring
a league-high 20 runs while contributing 12 RBI. Her 21 hits
were also the most in the league. Her .677 average is the second
highest total in 30 years of OCAA womens fastball. Dewey is
a member of an undefeated Lords teams who compiled a 10-0 regular
season record.
The third-year shortstop was also honoured as the OCAAs top
batter in 2010, and named an OCAA all-star. Deweys Durham College
hosts the 2010 OCAA womens fastball championship beginning Friday.
St. Clair College hurler Samantha Newton was named the OCAAs
top pitcher for 2010. There was no sophomore jinx for last years
rookie of the year as she led the league in wins, compiling a
5-0 record. The Windsor, Ont., product struck out 26 batters
in 30 innings. Newton allowed 14 runs on 23 hits and 21 walks
for an ERA of 3.27.
St. Clair will continue to be home to the reigning OCAA rookie
of the year, at least for another season. Saints catcher Lyndsay
Schincariol of Windsor, Ont., hit .500 in five games with St.
Clair. She scored six runs on eight hits while driving in 10.
St. Clair was hampered by rainouts this season, but still finished
second in the standings with a 7-2 record.
Rick Finlay of Seneca College is the 2010 coach of the year.
The Sting finished at .500 for the second straight season, matching
their 6-6 record of a year ago. This is a significant improvement
from a Seneca program that went 2-10 in 2008. Senecas biggest
win of the year came against defending OCAA champion St. Clair,
winning 11-7 in its season opener in early September. Finlay
is in his 23rd year as a coach.
Joining Dewey as an OCAA all-star is Durham teammate Samantha
Roelofsen of Alma, Ont. She was second behind Dewey in runs scored
with 18, contributing 17 hits for a .486 batting average. The
third-year second baseman also drove in six runs in 35 at bats.
The 2010 OCAA all-stars include veteran St. Clair infielders
Keri Bagley and Trisha Whaley. Bagley led the Saints with 17
hits and 13 runs, batting .486. The Windsor, Ont., native also
drove in eight runs. Whaley of Chatham, Ont. was first on the
team with a .556 average and 12 RBI. She also contributed 12
runs to go along with her 15 hits.
Senecas Kelly Milne and Heather Scrivens are also OCAA all-stars.
Milne, a catcher and outfielder, led the Sting with 13 RBI. The
Barrie, Ont., product went 11-for-31 for a .355 average, scoring
10 runs in her first OCAA season. Scrivens, a third-year second
baseman from Newmarket, Ont., led the Seneca team with a .480
batting average, scoring nine runs while driving home eight.
Melanie White and Kathleen Kropf are Mohawk Colleges OCAA all-stars
for 2010. White, from Caledonia, Ont., went .333 at the plate,
scoring three runs while driving in four in her second season.
Kropf, a first-year infielder from Waterloo, Ont., batted .286,
knocking in four runs while scoring eight.
Rounding out the 2010 edition of the OCAA all-stars are Brandy
Hillar and Brittany Proud of Conestoga College. Hillar, a first-year
shortstop from New Hamburg, Ont., led the Condors with eight
hits and five runs scored. She batted .308 while contributing
