Durham College student-athletes earn three provincial awards

NORTH YORK, Ont. – After one of the most successful weekends
in the 40 year history of the Durham College athletic program,
student-athletes were honoured with three provincial awards on
Monday announced by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association.

OCAA FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Shannon Ferguson, Durham Lords, Fastball

Durham is OCAA women’s fastball champions once again, thanks
in large part to the efforts of Shannon Ferguson (Brockville,
Ont.). The Lords third-year catcher was golden at the plate at
the OCAA championship tournament, going 7-for-9. She scored a
total of four runs and drove in one as Durham won three straight
to win its 15th provincial title. In the championship finale,
a 10-1 win over St. Clair College, Ferguson went 3-for-4 with
a run scored. Ferguson averaged at least two hits per game, and
was named tournament most valuable player.

OCAA TEAM OF THE WEEK
Durham College Women’s Golf

Durham College won its first-ever national women’s golf team
title at the PING/CCAA national championship. The Durham women’s
duo of Tiffany Albath and OCAA women’s champion Kayleigh Kraemer
earned individual silver and bronze medalists, respectively.
For Albath, it’s a matching medal for the silver she won at the
provincials. Albath’s (76-81-76) three-day total of 233 was 11
strokes short of gold medalist Josee Doyon of Champlain College.
Kraemer (78-80-77) finished two strokes behind her Durham college
teammate. Albath and Kraemer combined for scores of 154-161-153
for a three-day Durham team total of 468, twenty-five strokes
ahead of second place UBC-Okanagan.

OCAA TEAM OF THE WEEK
Durham Lords Women’s Fastball

Durham College claimed gold at the OCAA women’s fastball championship
on Saturday afternoon with a 10-1 victory over the St. Clair
Saints in the championship game. The championship marks the Lords
15th provincial title in women’s fastball, the most of any college
in the OCAA. It also completed a perfect OCAA season for Durham,
as the Lords went 10-0 in the regular season and then 3-0 at
the championship. Durham knocked off two-time defending OCAA
champion St. Clair twice, winning 12-2 on Day 1. Catcher Shannon
Ferguson earned tournament MVP honours as she went 7-for-9 at
the plate, scoring four runs and knocking in one run.

All three winners have also been named the Durham College athletes
of the week presented by Boston Pizza.
