Durham College student-athletes earn four provincial awards

NORTH YORK, Ont. – After one of the most successful weeks in the history of Durham College varsity athletics, the Lords accomplishments were recognized by the Ontario Colleges Athletic Association (OCAA) with their selections for the weekly team and student-athlete awards.

TEAM OF THE WEEK: Durham Women's Golf & Fastball
Durham successfully defended its national women's team title at the 2011 PING CCAA Golf National Championships from Oct. 19-21, as well as its OCAA women's fastball championship from Oct. 21-22. National bronze medalist Tiffany Albath and teammate Kayleigh Kraemer returned the national banner to Durham, while championship MVP Brittany Bell helped to repeat provincially.

OVERALL FEMALE: Brittany Bell, Durham, Women's Fastball
Brittany Bell (New Hamburg, Ont.) was named OCAA Women's Fastball Championship most valuable player, lifting Durham to a second straight provincial title. The first-year shortstop had a .714 batting average for the tournament, and was 2-for-3 in the gold medal game against Humber, scoring two runs. Durham defeated Humber 7-1. It marks Durham's 16th OCAA banner in women's fastball.

FASTBALL TOP PITCHER: Shannon Galea, Durham
Shannon Galea of Durham was named the top pitcher at the OCAA Women's Fastball Championship from Oct. 22-23. Galea started two games against Humber, allowing just one run over 14 total innings as Durham won its second straight OCAA title. The Oshawa, Ont., product struck out 22 batters in two complete games, allowing five hits while walking three. Durham defeated Humber 2-0 in the opening game, and 7-1 in the gold medal final.

FASTBALL TOP BATTER: Shannon Ferguson, Durham
Shannon Ferguson of Durham was named the top batter at the OCAA Women's Fastball Championship from Oct. 22-23. The Brockville, Ont., native batted .667 in three games, recording two base hits in each game. She drove in one run, and scored one run. Durham went 3-0 at the tournament to win their 16th OCAA championship, and second in consecutive years. Durham has not lost an OCAA regular season or playoff game since 2009.
