US World Cup of Softball VII - Game 2
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 29, 2012

Canada Suffers Second Loss at US World Cup of Softball VII

(Oklahoma City, OK) After losing a very close game against the Netherlands on Thursday, the Canadian Women's National Team came ready to bounce back against Australia, but a confusing play in the sixth inning brought the Aussies back into the game and they eventually took the 7-6 win over Team Canada.

Australia opened the scoring with a run in the first inning. Stacey Porter led off with a walk, was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and the next batter drew a walk before getting into a rundown between first and second to score Porter as Canada decided to play for the out. After a quick second inning, Canada fought back in the top of the third when Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) launched a two-out solo homerun over the right field fence. Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) then followed with a slap single and advanced to second on a throwing error, and scored on a two-run homerun by Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC), giving Canada a 3-1 lead.

Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) was solid in the pitcher's circle through the first three innings, allowing one run despite not giving up a hit with three walks and one strikeout. Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) came on in relief to start the bottom of the fourth and allowed a one-out single, but that runner was quickly erased when Erin Cumpstone (Saskatoon, SK) made a perfect throw to second to catch her stealing. Canada then added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning, as Megan Timpf (Port Dover, ON) drew a leadoff walk before Matthews worked the count before hitting her second homerun of the game (and third of the tournament), increasing Canada's lead to 5-1.

Australia was able to get things going in the bottom of the sixth in a very confusing inning. Melinda Weaver started off with a double and Stacey Porter singled to place runners at first and third. After Jocelyn Cater (Delta, BC) came on in relief of Hovinga, she threw an illegal pitch which allowed the runners to advance and score a run. The next batter then hit a weak ground ball to shortstop Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) and the runner was called out for obstruction. However, after a long discussion among the umpires, the call was overturned and the runner was allowed to score, cutting the lead to 5-3. A walk and an error loaded the bases, and another run scored on a passed ball. Jenna Caira (Toronto, ON) came in to relieve Cater, but allowed a single to tie the game, followed by a sacrifice fly to give Australia their first lead of the game with the score 6-5.

Despite all of the confusion in the previous inning, Canada showed a lot of resiliency in the top half of the seventh inning to come back and tie the game. Timpf forced a one-out walk, and after a strikeout for the second out, Sheena Lawrick (Calgary, AB) delivered a pinch-hit double off the centerfield fence to score Timpf. However, in the bottom of the inning, Australia managed to get the leadoff runner on base on an error, and with two outs, Brenda de Blaes hit a single up the middle to plate the winning run from second base and end the game.

Matthews hit two homeruns and drove in three runs for Canada, while Yee had a two-run blast. Hayward added two slap singles, while Lawrick's double rounded out Canada's hits. In the pitcher's circle, Demore was solid through three innings and Hovinga pitched two innings of effective relief, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with one strikeout. Cater allowed three unearned runs on only a walk and retired one batter, while Caira took the tough loss by allowing one unearned run on two hits with a strikeout in an inning and a third pitched.

Box score and play by play: Canada 6 vs. Australia 7

Team Canada will try to pick itself up and will take on the United States (1-0) at 6:00pm CDT on Saturday.
