Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship - Game 5
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
July 7, 2012

USA defeats Canada at Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship

(Surrey, BC) After two important wins on Friday, the Canadian Women's National Team was back in action this afternoon as they took on the United States. The Americans built a 5-0 lead, but Canada was able to keep it close until the top of the sixth inning when Team USA exploded for eight runs to win the game 14-2 in six innings on the run-ahead rule.

The Americans did not waste any time to get on the scoreboard in the top of the first, as leadoff hitter Michelle Moultrie tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly. The following inning, a pair of walks later followed by a single produced USA's second run. The Americans kept coming in the third by scoring three more runs, all on a homerun by Valerie Arioto. However, Team Canada was able to pick itself up to chip away with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Victoria Hayward (Toronto, ON) started the rally by working a two-out walk, Melanie Matthews (Surrey, BC) reached on an error and Joey Lye (Toronto, ON) singled to load the bases. Jenn Yee (North Delta, BC) then hit a two-run single, but Lye was retired in a rundown on the play to end the inning.

The United States added another run in the top of the fifth to increase its lead to 6-2 on a throwing error, and then took advantage of two errors and pounded out seven hits to score eight runs - all with two outs - in the top of the sixth. Canada was unable to get anything going in the bottom of the sixth as Team USA won 14-2 on the run-rule.

Karissa Hovinga (Edmonton, AB) took the loss in the pitcher's circle for Canada, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks with two strikeouts in three innings. Madison Schreyer (Winnipeg, MB) allowed five unearned runs on four hits with two strikeouts in two and two third innings, and Marina Demore (Richmond, BC) came out in relief with two outs in the sixth, and allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk. Canada's offence only produced three hits off American pitcher Keilani Ricketts, all singles by Matthews, Lye and Yee.

Box score and play by play: Canada 2 vs. United States 14

The loss dropped Canada's record to 3-2, while the United States improved to 4-0. Earlier in the day, Venezuela (2-2) defeated Puerto Rico (1-4) 5-2. Three more games will be played later today, including Australia (1-3) vs. Venezuela, Japan (4-0) vs. USA and New Zealand (0-5) vs. Australia. Team Canada will be back in action against Puerto Rico at 1:30pm PDT on Sunday, and the playoff round will also begin in the evening.
