FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE<BR>Softball Canada Announces 2006 Men’s National Team Pool Coaches<BR>November 22nd, 2005<BR><BR>(Ottawa) Softball Canada announced today the 2006 Men’s National Team Pool coaches. Jim <BR>Jones of Leduc Alberta, Tom Doucette from Middle Musquodoboit Nova Scotia, Ray Tilley <BR>from Woodstock Ontario, Don Bates who hails from Saskatoon Saskatchewan, and Marty <BR>Kernaghan of Grafton Ontario all join Softball Canada’s men’s national team coaching <BR>staff.<BR><BR>Senior Men’s National Team Head Coach Mark Smith on the group; “I am extremely pleased <BR>with our new coaching staff. This talented group brings tremendous knowledge and <BR>credibility of the game to the men’s national team program. I look forward to moving the <BR>program forward with them”. <BR><BR>Jim Jones is resident of Leduc, Alberta who brings a wealth of coaching experience to <BR>the men’s
national team program. Jim is a fully certified Level 3 coach, a Course <BR>Evaluator and Master Course Conductor. Jim has coached the gold medal winning team at <BR>the Pee Wee Western Canadian Championships 2002 – 2005. In addition to his coaching <BR>success in softball, Jim is the Executive Director of the Alberta Amateur Softball <BR>Association, former board member of Softball Saskatchewan and former President of the <BR>Leduc Minor Softball Association. Jim has a long and successful history as an athlete, <BR>having played on the men’s national team 1983 – 1988 playing on two men’s two Pan <BR>American Games gold medal winning teams. Jim is a member of the Saskatoon Sports Hall of <BR>Fame and Softball Canada Hall of Fame as both an individual athlete and member of the <BR>1983 men’s Pan American Games team.<BR><BR>Tom Doucette is one of the most highly respected junior coaches in
Canada. He has been <BR>coaching junior aged athletes for 35 years in both the sport of softball and <BR>basketball. Tom is a graduate of the National Sport Centre – Victoria where he received <BR>his level 4 coaching certification. Tom is a Master Course Conductor in Atlantic <BR>Canada. Tom has attended four Canada Summer Games as a head coach of Nova Scotian teams <BR>and served a Team Leader for the junior men’s national team in 2001 and coach with the <BR>2005 junior men’s national team. Tom is playing a lead role in developing and piloting <BR>the new CBET (Competency Based Coaching Education Program) for Softball Canada. Tom is <BR>a retired high school teacher.<BR><BR>Ray Tilley has served as a senior men’s national team assistant coach since 2001. Ray <BR>was a member of the men’s national team program from 1983 – 1995 serving as team captain <BR>1990 – 1995. Ray is a level
three certified coach and member of Softball Canada’s Hall <BR>of Fame an individual athlete and as a member of the 1983 Pan American Games gold medal <BR>winning team. Ray is a Correctional Officer with the Ontario Ministry of Corrections. <BR><BR>Don Bates is a former senior softball player who played 18 years of senior “A” <BR>competition winning the 1987 senior men’s national championship as a member of the <BR>Saskatoon Rempel Brothers program. Don is a level three certified coach with coaching <BR>experience that ranges from youth to Intermediate men and also includes coaching elite <BR>level volleyball. Don has spent the past 20 years delivering pitching clinics for <BR>softball players of all ages and has developed athletes who have gone on to play at the <BR>NCAA level. Don served as a guest coach in 2005 with both the junior men’s national <BR>team and the senior men’s
Evaluation Camp in July. Don is an elementary school Principal <BR>in Saskatoon.<BR><BR>Marty Kernaghan is arguably one of the most talented and successful softball players <BR>ever to come out of Canada. Marty represented Canada as a member of the men’s national <BR>team program from 1983 – 1992 winning gold at the 83’ and 87 Pan American Games and was <BR>a key contributor on the 1992 ISF world championship team. Marty also led the Penn <BR>Corp/National Health Care team from Sioux City Iowa to four ISC World Tournament <BR>Championships. In addition, Marty played on four ASA National Championship teams and <BR>was inducted into the ISC Hall of Fame in 2002. Marty has served as head coach of the <BR>Sioux and Youth Athletics and head coach of the Sergeant Bluff High School softball <BR>program. Marty served as a guest coach at the men’s Evaluation Camp in July. <BR><BR><BR><BR><BR>For
