Costello steals the show in Micksburg victory
Take 1-0 lead in fastball final

The Micksburg Twins have taken the lead in the Upper Ottawa Valley Men’s Fastball League finals against the Campbell’s Bay Royals, thanks to pitcher Corey Costello.

A fourth-inning home run hit by Costello ended his pitching duel with Lenny Burger, and proved to be the game winner, as Micksburg chalked up a 1-0 victory to take the opening game in the best-of-seven series.

Playing at home, the Twins first made their bats sing in the bottom of the first, with a double by Barry McIntyre. However, he got no further than that as Burger quickly shut his teammates
down. This continued throughout the game, with Burger and Costello keeping the bats quiet, with an able infield mopping up the occasional hit.

Still scoreless by the bottom of the fourth inning, after Brad Steege was called out, Corey Costello stepped up next and connected with Burger’s pitch, sending the ball over the fence. Micksburg pressed hard to increase their lead. Jamie Mick struck out, then Chad Costello singled. Under the two out rule, the Twins’ catcher was called back and Mick acted as his substitute runner. With Kerr Childerhose at bat, Mick attempted to steal second and slide under the reach of the second baseman, but was called out by the umpire covering the base. After that, Costello and Burger picked up the pitching duel where they had left off, which quieted the bats for the remainder of the game. The Twins and Royals head to Bryson, Quebec for game two of the final on Tuesday, Sept. 5, starting at 8 p.m. Game three is back in Micksburg.
