No one knows for sure, but he is on the roster.

Beautiful weather, a great venue, and a superbly run tournament were in store for the eight fastball teams that attended the 1st annual Gil Read Memorial Fastball Tournament in Ottawa Ontario on July 4th-6th 2008.

The Carp team, sponsored by I4C Consulting and normally playing under the name “I4C Victory”, entered the tournament as the “I4C Pirates” and wore yellow and black “PIRATES” jerseys as a tribute to Gil Read. Gil coached several of the Carp players during their younger days with the Kanata Pirates minor softball team. Carp was without many of its regular players for the weekend, but picked up some local players to fill the holes, including two former Kanata Pirates in Tony MacDonald and Chris Read. The starting infield for Carp’s Friday evening game consisted of five players who grew up playing together and learning the game from Gil Read.

In the round-robin portion of the tournament, Carp finished 2nd in their pool with wins over the Greely DNTW Eagles and Ed Taylor’s Team and a loss to a combined Fitzroy/Manotick squad playing as Fitzroy Harbour West Carleton Electric.

In the quarter finals, Carp defeated the Kingston Cobras midget squad and then avenged their loss to Fitzroy with a win in the semi-finals. That set up a final against the #6 ranked Team Easton Thunder, who added former national team member Jeff Seed and ace pitcher Cory Costello to their roster for the weekend. In the end, Easton prevailed by a score of 4-1, but were it not for some outstanding defensive plays by Easton’s shortstop Pat O’Connor and outfielders Dave Tubman and Cory Morrison to snuff out some Carp rallies, the score could have been much different.

Offensively, Costello and Seed led the way for Easton, with Costello driving in three of Easton’s four runs. Costello also pitched and earned the win with relief from Dan Bradley. Neil Cooke went the distance in a losing cause for Carp.

Ottawa, ON

Results from the first annual Gil Read Memorial Tournament in Ottawa on July 4-6. Congratulations to Al Read and his team of volunteers for a successful event.

Note: Carp I4C Victory played as “I4C Pirates” in honour of Gil Read’s “Kanata Pirates” team for the weekend.

Game 1 – Friday July 4th – 7Pm

Ottawa, ON Team Easton Thunder 8 – Kanata, ON Local Heroes 2
WP – Dan Bradley
LP – Nick Bowman

Game 2 – Friday July 4th – 9pm

Carp, ON I4C Pirates 8 – Greely, ON DNTW Eagles 4
WP – Neil Cooke
LP – Ryan Cox

Game 3 – Saturday July 5th – 10am

Quyon, QC Combat Flyers 9 – Kingston, ON Midget Cobras 8
WP – Matt Greer
LP – Jeff Barber

Game 4 – Saturday July 5th – 11am

Fitzroy Harbour, ON West Carleton Electric 13 – Blackburn, ON Ed Taylor’s 6
WP – Bud Hanlon
LP – Arron Amo

Game 5 – Saturday July 5th – 12pm

Easton Thunder 8 – Kingston Cobras 0
WP – Dan Bradley
LP – Josh Lockridge

Game 6 – Saturday July 5th – 1pm

Quyon Flyers 3 – Local Heroes 1
WP – Jorain Graham
LP – Duane Bromley

Game 7 – Saturday July 5th – 2pm

West Carleton Electric 4 – I4C Pirates 1
WP – Brad Porter
LP – Neil Cooke

Game 8 – Saturday July 5th – 3pm

Greely Eagles 0 – Ed Taylor’s 0
Greely P – Ryan Cox
Ed’s P – Darren Featherstone

Game 9 – Saturday July 5th – 4pm

Quyon Flyers 3 – Easton Thunder 2
WP – Matt Greer
LP – Dan Konkle

Game 10 – Saturday July 5th – 5pm

Kingston Cobras 4 – Local Heroes 3
WP – Cory Alkerton
LP – Nick Bowman

Game 11 – Saturday July 5th – 6pm

I4C Pirates 11 – Ed Taylor’s 4
WP – Trevor Wood
LP – Darren Featherstone

Game 12 – Saturday July 5th – 7pm

Greely Eagles 4 – West Carleton Electric 0
WP – Shannon Borho
LP – Bud Hanlon

Quarter-finals

Game 13 – Sunday July 6th – 10am

Easton Thunder 6 – Greely Eagles 1
WP – Dan Bradley
LP – Shannon Borho

Game 14 – Sunday July 6th – 10am

I4C Pirates 5 – Kingston Cobras 1
WP – Neil Cooke
LP – Cory Alkerton

Semi-Finals

Game 15 – Sunday July 6th – 12pm

Easton Thunder 10 – Quyon Flyers 0
WP – Cory Costello
LP – Matt Greer

Game 16 – Sunday July 6th – 12pm

I4C Pirates 7 – West Carleton Electric 2
WP – Trevor Wood
LP – Brad Porter

Finals

Game 17 – Sunday July 6th – 3pm

Easton Thunder 4 – I4C Pirates 1
WP – Cory Costello
LP – Neil Cooke
SV- Dan Bradley

1st place – Easton Thunder – 5 wins – 1 loss – $1,000.00 – Team MVP – Cory Costello
2nd place – I4C Pirates – 4 wins – 2 losses – $500 – Team MVP – Chris Read & Al Read
T – 3rd place – Quyon Flyers – 3 wins – 1 loss – Team MVP – Matt Greer
T – 3rd place – West Carleton Electric – 2 wins – 2 losses – Team MVP – Trevor Lahey
T – 5th place – Greely Eagles – 1 Win – 2 Losses – 1 tie – Team MVP – Ryan Cox
T – 5th place – Kingston Cobra’s – 1 Win – 3 Losses – Team MVP – Josh Lockridge
7th place – Ed Taylor’s – 0 wins – 2 losses – 1 tie – Team MVP – Darren Featherstone
8th place – Local Heroes – 0 wins – 3 losses – Team MVP – Duane Bromley

Editor’s Note: Great post below from our good friend Adam Brown of Fitzroy Harbour.
