ASA Men's Major 2004

SOUTH BEND, IN -- The race is on for the ASA Men's Major Fast Pitch  National Championship which begins Thursday, August 5 in South Bend, IN.

The twenty best men's major fast pitch teams from 12 states will start play  in the Amateur Softball Association 72nd annual Men's Major Fast Pitch  National Championship at the four-field Belleville Complex.

It's the first time South Bend has hosted the Men's Major and the second time that this National Championship Final has been held in the state. The first time this event was held in Indiana was 1966 in Indianapolis.

Sixteen of the 20 teams will compete in first round action Thursday including the defending champion, The Farm Tavern of Madison, WI, which won its first ASA Men's Major fast pitch title last year in Midland, MI.

The Farm, which won the Bob Walsh Memorial Classic and finished second in its own invitational tournament in July, will open defense of its title on  Thursday at 7 p.m. against the Dolan Murphy Shamrocks of Aurora, Illinois.

Following are the remaining first-round games:

Heflin Builders, Balston, NY vs. Midland, MI  Explorers, 5 p.m.;

Broken Bow Spirit, Broken Bow, NE vs. Pueblo Bandits,  Pueblo, CO, 7 p.m.;

Separators, New Castle, IN vs. The Bull/Townline,
DePere, WI, 5 p.m.;

bullet

Winterset A's, WInterset, IA vs. Indiana Jaybirds, Anderson, IN, 5 p.m.;

bullet

Plangger's Furniture, Elkhart, IN vs. Fred's  Interiors, Quad City, IA, 5 p.m. and

bullet

The Freight, Hillsboro, IL vs. Circle  Tap, Green Bay, WI, 7 p.m.

Circle Tap was runner-up in the 2003 ASA Men's Major Fast Pitch National  Championship, losing to The Farm Tavern, 4-0, in the championship game.

Other teams in the tournament include the Imaging Solutions Knights of  Fargo, ND; HIS Construction of Houston, TX; Blackhawk Athletic Club of  Rockford, IL and the Lafayette Pub of St. Louis, MO.

Twenty games will be played on Friday including 12 in the loser's bracket, with nine Saturday. The championship is scheduled Sunday morning at 10 with  the if necessary game scheduled at noon. Daily updated will be reported on
