This Week in Fastball with Dennis Dosman
Big time foul ball last week…I gave the Outlaws the win over the very hot Wellington Sox in the Mitchell Mets tournament….The Sox were the winners ….and are they ever winning…racking up a record of 12 wins against 1 loss in the South Perth League..way out in front (by 40 runs) in runs scored….way down low in runs scored against… Mel Ross and Todd Uhrig 2nd lowest in runs allowed, Jeremy Creeden and Todd Uhrig in the top 6 in batting avg. Jeremy leads the league in homers, and Jim Culling and Scott MacDougall are also high in HR production.
Just about the right time for a great fastball tournament…the weather is hot, the teams have a few tournaments and league games in the scorebook, the OASAs are around the corner, teams are ramping it up for the ISCs. It’s time to start putting the foot to the floorboard and seeing if the bats can produce some runs, if the gloves can provide some great defence and if the pitcher’s can efficiently provide a lot of outs over 7 innings..
Let’s head to Tavistock this week and enjoy eight great teams at the ball yard.
No need to discuss Jarvis, they are a great team, ranked #1 for every good reason..pitching, hitting and defence, no shortcomings there.
Midland Explorers, showed well at the Legends a couple of weeks ago, making it to Sunday afternoon….Last year they were back in Michigan before the Tavistock championship game began….don’t think they will surprise the border guards this year
Owen Sound….what do they lack??? Like Jarvis, solid top to bottom of the lineup, offence, defence, grinders from the opening pitch to the 21st out and preparing for the Canadians in late August with a solid team of great Ontario ball players…
Argentina Juniors….looking forward to seeing this club…
Local teams…from the Tri County…Sweaburg Crush, checking the TriCounty Web site and it looks like the Crush are winning a lot of games, only a couple of losses..
The South Perth….KW Cubs, Shakespeare Falcons and Elmira Expos…three top clubs….from one of the most competitive fastball leagues anywhere. The Cubs blew thru the Springfield ISC Qualifier undefeated, winning all games in less that the regulation 7….no hitters and one hitters…and beat the New Zealand Black Sox at New Dundee 5 – 0 and left runners on base several times…
The Expos have run out of steam lately. Looking at the South Perth stats shows the Expos low on run production but on the other hand, they don’t allow much. The Casey Halstead and Dan Martin duo keeps the base runners to a minumum..but lack of production hurts… Up against some of these high production clubs in Tavistock, the lack of runs may hurt the Expos….
Shakespeare Falcons are 6 – 3 in South Perth league play…2nd to Wellington…The Falcons have some nice hitting..Dave Kollman; .467, Reid Yantzi; 417, Matt Mclaren.375, Jsmir Noy .350 and Sam Forbes at .333
The OASA Great Lakes is coming up very soon..Civic Holiday weekend..July29th, 30th, 31st. This is the weekend every year since wooden bats and no batting helmets that the Ontario senior and intermediate teams have taken to the diamond to claim provincial supremacy, this year it is at Doug Fischer Memorial in New Dundee.
……I have the Senior Elimination Draw set for New Dundee…Seniors will play all their games on the Saturday……
11AM…Owen Sound Selects vs Port Elgin Blue Devils
1pm…..Selects vs Hallman Twins
3pm…..Blue Devils vs Hallman Twins
7pm…2nd vs 3rd semi final
9pm ..Winner of 7pm plays 1st place team
and who says there are no surprises anymore
The Intermediate tournament draw will be out shortly..
Game of the week….Wednesday night, Breslau Stadium…Badgers vs the KW Cubs…
Badgers won in the bottom of the 7th..had trailed 2 – 1 from the 4th, til the 7th..two on base for Breslau and Brandon Horn knocks in one runner on a double, other runner out at home on a 8 – 4 – 2 throw to the plate……Horn at 3rd…. tied and 1 out…..and second baseman Jim White long fly ball to deep centre, RBIs Horn for the win…nice game..,
Andrew Phibbs WP, Ryan French LP
I managed to get a good seat right behind the screen for this one but moved back a few rows when it got crowded behind the screen around the bottom of the 3rd…
Cub’s Brad Thomson off to Europe with Emily…scouting trip..will be back in time for the Great Lakes…
Ponsonby….Last weekend, the Kitchener Outlaws rode the arms or Dan Martin and Kevin Buckley to the Groves Memorial Hospital Charity Tournament….They outlasted the Cobourg Force who had to meet the Outlaws twice on Sunday…The hot sun and long day took its toll on the Force, they won the opener, but could not stay with the Outlaws in the forced double elimination Championship game.
Tavistock….8 teams…….4 days….2 diamonds….1 heck of a lot of fastball fun….
See you in Tavistock….
Dennis
