Softball Newfoundland Labrador set to host 2016 Men’s & Masters Men’s Canadian Championships
(St. John’s, NL) Softball Newfoundland Labrador is delighted to host the Men’s & Master Men’s Canadian Championships this summer in St. John’s. The events will be played at Lions Park and the Caribou Memorial Softball Complex in the province’s capital city and are set to begin on August 31 and conclude with the championship games on Sunday, September 4.
Paul Smith Sr., president of Softball Newfoundland Labrador, says the provincial association is eager to welcome Canada’s best fastpitch players to St. John’s and is confident the recent achievements of Newfoundland-born players on the national and international stage will result in unprecedented fan interest and spectator attendance over the course of the events.
“Canadian men’s softball has enjoyed tremendous success in recent years, culminating with the national senior men’s team’s victories at the Pan American Games and World Baseball Softball Conferderation World Championships last summer. Softball Newfoundland Labrador is determined to keep that excitement going,” says Smith.
“This event will feature some of the world’s top fastpitch players hitting the field for their respective home provinces, including several of our own who starred for Canada and International Softball Congress teams on the international diamond in 2015.”
This year’s Men’s championhip tournament features 11 teams from coast-to-coast-to-coast. Joining the defending Champion Galway Hitmen, the Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs, and a third team from the host province, four clubs from Saskatchewan, two from Ontario, and one each from Nova Scotia and PEI.
The Masters’ tournament, meanwhile, features five teams including two from Newfoundland Labrador, two from Ontario and one from Nova Scotia.
St. Johgn’s has played host to the Canadian Men’s Championships on four previous occasions: 1979, 1989, 1995 & 2007.
This year, the Galway Hitmen have an opportunity to win a fifth straight title for the province. If successful, it will mark the first time in the event’s history that a provincial association has won five successive Men’s Canadian championships. Softball Newfoundland Labrador is currently tied with the British Columbia Amateur Softball Association whose Victoria Bates Construction won four consecutve championships from 1975 to 1978.
“While we wish the best of luck to all teams participating in the senior men’s tournament, we’re especially hopefuly that one of our three provincial reprsentatives can make history on home soil,” adds Smith.
In the weeks to come, more information on teams, schedules, and ticket prices will be available at Softball Canada’s official tournament website: championship.softball.ca/mens.
Each year, Softball Canada presents 11 Canadian Championships in various locations across the country. These Championships represent the pinnacle of many athletes’ careers, as they complete for the title of National Champion.
