Canadian fastpitch championship begins Wednesday in St. John’s; Newfoundland teams have won title four straight years.
The St. John’s Molson Senior Men’s Softball League played its final pair of games Sunday before taking a break for the 2016 national senior men’s championship, which gets under way Wednesday in St. John’s.
It’s the first time the nationals have been held in St. John’s since 2007, and the host province enters the tournament as the four-time defending champion, unprecedented for any sport in the history of Newfoundland on the national stage.
The 10-team national championship — arguably “Canadian” in name only, as there are four teams from Saskatchewan, three from Newfoundland, two from Ontario and one from Nova Scotia — will be played at the Caribou Complex in Pleasantville.
Opening ceremonies are scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. Click here to continue reading at The Telegram.
