At the Canadian senior men’s fastpitch championship being held in St. John’s this week, those playoff aspirations come in two parts — the first is to get there, the second is to get there with a double life.
Eight of the 10 teams in the championship will advance to the playoffs, set to begin Saturday at the Caribou Complex in the Pleasantville area of the city. The top four finishers will advance with a double life, meaning they have a loss to give in their quest for a medal.
Two of the three Newfoundland entries are well on their way to that double life status. Heading into late games Thursday night, the Galway Hitmen, the four-time defending national champions, and Kelly’s Pub Molson Bulldogs were sitting on top of the standings, both with 4-0 records as the only undefeated clubs through the first two days.
The Hitmen have mostly bowled over the opposition, scoring 44 runs overall while giving up just four and seeing three of their contests ended early by the seven-run mercy rule. Click here to continue reading at The Telegram.
