Update: January 8, 2011
Many of you have been following Milt’s progress on the caring pages site. I know he loves to read your comments. Although he is on the road to recovery, this will be a very long process incurring many expenses not covered by insurance for both him and wife, Sheree as she cares for him. Even when Milt is released from the hospital he will need to remain in Iowa City for outpatient care. Sheree is staying in Iowa City as well, but must travel between there and the Quad Cities several times a week to maintain the household. The Quint Cities Metro Umpires Association Board has established an ongoing fund at IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union to help defray these costs. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund is encouraged to send donations to:
IH Mississippi Valley Credit Union
P.O. Box 1010
Moline, IL 61265Please make checks payable to the Milt Hand Benefit Fund and include the account number 70149337 on the memo line to ensure that your gift gets to Milt.
This fund will remain active throughout Milt’s treatment and recovery. If you have any questions, please contact me.
I would like to thank you now for your love, prayers and support for Milt and his family.
God bless you all,
-Denny Mesick,

Prayers for umpire Milt Hand
Editor’s Note: We share the following from ISC Deputy UiC Les Novak. Milt was instrumental not only on the field in doing a great job umpiring at the ISC II ToC in 2009, but also contributed significantly off the field with the host committee as well. We send him our prayers and best wishes so that we may see him when we return to Quad Cities in August.
I wanted to pass along some information that I received regarding Milt Hand, one of our softball umpires that works in the Iowa Conference, Big Ten, Missouri Valley and also had the plate on the final ISC II championship game at Quad Cities in 2009.
If you do not know Milt, he has been retired for a few years from the City of Moline where he was the Director of Parks and Recreation for many years. For those of you who know Milt and have had a chance to be around him or work with him, you know he is a true gentleman in every sense of the word, not to mention an excellent softball umpire.
Sheree Hand (Milt Hand’s wife) called yesterday to say that Milt had not been feeling well for some time and his red blood cell count was not what it should be. The doctors have diagnosed now that Milt has leukemia. He is in the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City and will be there at least a month. He is too ill for visitors or phone calls at this time, but would welcome cards, emails and certainly prayers.
His address at University of Iowa Hospitals is:
