Saturday, September 19th, 2009

The Ontario Challenge Cup is underway this weekend in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. The winner of the tournament will receive an entry-fee paid berth in the 2010 ISC II Tournament of Champions in Midland, Michigan. ISC II Commissioner Blair Setford is on hand posting Blackberry updates throughout the weekend.

Click here for the results thus far.
(The link above will retrieve all results posted at the Deuce on ongoing basis over the weekend)

Full schedule here. All games will be played at the Packham Complex in Stratford.

Editor’s note:
For those not familiar with Stratford, it is a charming small town just down the road from Monkton (World Fastball Invitational), noted for its Shakespearean theatre. (well, OK, and for its fastball too). It is located about 90 minutes west of Toronto. Stratford was host to Ballparkradio and other staff for the Monkton tournament.

Molson’s Sr. Men – NL

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

In Molson’s Senior Men’s Fastpitch at Lions Park, Kellys Pub Junior Canadians dumped Lower Path Grill & Bar 9-2 to take a two games to none lead in the best of five semi-finals. Mike Noftall was the winning pitcher. And Kellys Pub Molson Canadians got by West Side Charlie’s Bud Light 3-2 in ten innings to go up two games to none in their series. Sean Cleary pitched the win. There are two games on the Molson’s Intermediate Men’s Fastpitch playoff schedule tonight. At 6 it’s Three Cheers Pub/Bud Light versus Trimmer Homes and at 8, Bay Roberts Rovers take on Coastal Marine and Recreation. Three Cheers and Bay Roberts lead their respective series one game to none.

Editor’s note: Readers may remember Mike Noftall as a member of Team Canada’s 19u national team that captured the silver medal at the ISF Jr. Worlds at Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, in the summer of 2008. Sean Cleary pitched for the St. John’s team from Newfoundland in the recent Sr. Canadians, helping his squad come within one win of the Ontario medal sweep of Kitcher/Jarvis/St. Thomas. St. John’s Newfoundland was dubbed the “pleasant surprise” team of the 2009 Sr. Canadians and “team of the future”. Lots of young talent on “The Rock”.

Saga of a super southpaw

Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Cap tip to Dave Blackburn for this one:

From the NorthShore Outlook:

King of the hill – North Van’s Buster Moberg was B.C.’s premier fastpitch pitcher from 1958 to 1971. -Len Corben photo

By Len Corben – North Shore Outlook

Batters were like putty in Buster Moberg’s hands… his left hand in particular.

The southpaw-throwing Buster – the eldest of four softball-playing brothers from North Vancouver that included Vern, Ted and Don, all outstanding in their own right – is arguably the greatest pitcher in the history of the sport in B.C.

His impressive records in the South Hill Major Men’s League, accumulated from 1958-71 during the league’s heyday as B.C.’s top senior “A” circuit, show just how dominant he was.

Check this out: Most career wins (111), most innings pitched (l,099), most strikeouts (1,598; an average of almost 1.5 per inning), most no-hitters (11), most one-hitters (14) and most shutouts (33).

The burly southpaw (6’2”, 215 pounds) once struck out 10 straight, the first 10 batters in the game. Another time he threw 16 1/3 consecutive hitless innings. At one point over four seasons, he won 28 league games in a row.

He held the league record for most strikeouts in a game, first at 20 in 1963, then 21 in a 10-inning game in 1964 and finally at 22 in a 13-inning contest in 1965. (Brother Don eclipsed that mark when he struck out 30 in a 24-inning game in 1981.)

Take me out to the virtual ball game

Toronto writer provides play-by-play from World Men’s Softball Championship

Al Doran, of Alsfastball brought the ISF Championships to the World

Take Me Out to the Virtual Ball Game

For most people, watching softball means beer, popcorn and hot afternoons in the stands, cheering on your favourite team.

Some fans of the World Men’s Softball Championship, which started July 17 in Saskatoon, are getting their fix in a different way – glued to their laptops.

It’s thanks to Ontario’s Al Doran, who is writing play-by-play from almost every game of the 10-day tournament.

At Wednesday afternoon’s Argentina versus Indonesia game, Doran sat hunched at his laptop computer in a green, caged-off press booth behind home plate, typing out the results from every batter’s visit to the plate.

He also included some casual observations: “It is a bright, sunny, and hot day with light breeze, great day for a suntan in the stands,” Doran wrote early in the game.

Baseball strike spurred interest

Doran’s interest in writing play-by-play came during the Major League Baseball strike in 1994. Unable to watch baseball on TV, he travelled to a softball tournament in Prince Edward Island.

“I was surprised and disappointed [to] get back to Toronto and nobody knew that the Toronto Gators had come number two in the world. It wasn’t in any of the media,” Doran told CBC News.

Softball fan Al Doran does live play-by-play from his laptop at an international tournament in Saskatoon. (Kathy Fitzpatrick/CBC)Doran, who lives in Brampton, Ont., travels to tournaments and posts his commentary and play-by-play to his website, simply for the love of the game, and to provide a service no one else is.

He updates his website with plays twice every inning.

Doran has received emails from people who follow his website in some far-flung places, including a Canadian, Rick Warford, who is working on a research ship in the South China Sea.

“There’s four [Newfoundlanders] on the Canadian team so I like following them as well,” Warford told CBC News by telephone from the waters near Singapore.

Softball federation catching up

Organizers of the tournament in Saskatoon are reaching out to softball fans through their own website.

For the first time, fans can watch live video of all 72 games, for about $60.

“When you put on a big softball tournament, it’s almost expected in some ways that you’re able to show some sort of live broadcast out there through the web,” International Softball Federation organizer Mark Loehndorf told CBC News.

There are 16 teams from five continents playing in the tournament in Saskatoon, including the United States, the Philippines, South Africa and host Canada, which was undefeated after six games as of Wednesday.

The ISF World Men’s Championship wraps up Sunday, with the gold medal game at 3 p.m. CT.
