Farewell for softball champ

Monday, June 29th, 2009

SAFE TRAVELS: Among those bidding Marty Grant, back row, middle, farewell were, back row, councillor Aldo Miccio and Jack Fletcher and front, from left Lewis Miccio, Grant’s son Cooper and Hugo Fletcher

Around 30 friends and supporters bid Nelson’s Marty Grant an emotional farewell on Sunday as the veteran Black Sox pitcher left for his fifth world championship softball campaign in Canada.

With three world crowns already under his belt, the 42-year-old Grant is chasing title No 4 in Saskatoon starting on July 17.

An official sendoff from councillor Aldo Miccio, representing Mayor Kerry Marshall, and a rousing Haka Tika Tonu performed by the Nelson kapa haka group Whatukura were part of the brief farewell ceremony at Nelson Airport.

Grant thanked his supporters and training partners Derryn French, Sam Miller, Simon Ashby and Jack Fletcher, and his friends who in a surprise gesture last week presented Grant’s wife Abbie and son Cooper with air tickets to travel to Canada for the championships. Abbie is recovering from successful breast cancer surgery.

Grant’s progress can be followed on his Twitter page or via the international softball federation website link for the champs, which will provide coverage of games and Ballpark Radio.

Editor’s note: “Bon Voyage” might be a more suitable headline; “Farewell” sounds like retirement and Marty is very much on the active player list, earning All World honors at last year’s ISC World Tournament at age 42. The last line of the story is not quite accurate — we’ll be broadcasting the Black Sox games on Ballparkradio at the World Fastball Invitational at Monkton this coming week/end, July 2-5, 2009, but not the ISF Championships which start July 17, 2009. Ballparkradio did submit a proposal to broacast the 2009 ISF World Championships in Saskatoon, but was not selected to do the broadcasting.

The final schedule of live streaming audio broadcasts is due out this weekend, so be sure to keep an eye out here at the Morning Brief for that post.

Kyle Smith will head up the broadcasts for the weekend, and will be joined by yours truly, Steve Sabourin, Blair Setford, Joe Todd, and tournament director Brian Ballie. As readers know, Kyle has been broadcasting men’s fastball at the ISC II for several years, along with his minor league hockey broadcasting. A graduate of a Canadian broadcasting school, Kyle’s knowledge of the game, its players, and his blend of information and humor have made him a listener’s favorite. Kyle headed up last summer’s live audio broadcasts of the ISF Junior World Championships from Whitehorse, Yukon, Canada, heard by thousands ’round the world.

A short clip of Kyle’s dramatic call of the conclusion to the Canada v. New Zealand game can be heard by clicking here. (give it time to load)

Earlier this week, Kyle was named by the ISC as one of four play-by-play broadcasters for the 2009 ISC World Tournament.

Steve Sabourin is a pro sports broadcaster from Canada, and the original “Voice of the Monkton Tournament”. Steve has done live local radio broadcasts from the tournament since its inception, via the radio station that he works for. In 2007, Steve accepted the invitation of ISC II commish Blair Setford to join the Ballparkradio crew for part of the ISC II T of C in Kitchener, and has graciously agreed to do some live streaming broadcasts on Ballparkradio at Monkton this year, on Friday and Saturday, in between his Thursday night and Sunday broadcasts for local radio. We at Ballparkradio are pleased to add Steve to the lineup, and know that fastball fans will enjoy the professionalism he brings to the broadcasts.

Ballparkradio will feature Steve’s local radio stream for Thursday night, and broadcast Friday through Sunday.

We are pleased to share a special edition of “Diamond Dirt” with you, published by our good friend, editor John Thompson. As most readers know, John published the daily editions of Diamond Dirt for fans in Kitchener at the 2002, 2006 and 2007 ISC World Tournament and ISC II Tournament of Champions, providing timely information and interesting stories and notes on the players, complete with photos.

This issue features the visiting ISF World Champions, the New Zealand Black Sox, who will be playing exhibition games against the South Perth All Stars of Ontario, and the Bridgeport Braves and K-W Cubs on July 1 and July 7, respectively, bookending the Monkton tournament to be played July 2-5, 2009.

From John:

For you and your fans on FastpitchWest, please note the attached edition of Diamond Dirt for the Wednesday July 1 (Drayton) and Tuesday July 7 (Kitchener) games between the New Zealand Black Sox National Team and representative teams from the South Perth Fastball League (All Stars, Bridgeport Braves and K- Cubs).

DRAYTON is a small community of about 1,000 people) that is celebrating its 10th anniversary as an amalgamated community – part of “Mapleton”. Not coincidentally, (ISC Hall of Famer) Larry Lynch is a an part of that community and a major factor in bringing the Black Sox to Drayton. Drayton is about 20 miles (35 km) north of Kitchener-Waterloo, and also home base for Drayton Entertainment, a not-for-profit theatre group that provides live performances of musicals, broadway hits etc. to more than 100,000 patrons each year in six theatres throughout Ontario.

Maritime Fastball League makes return to capital

Saturday, June 20th, 2009

From The Guardian

Fawcetts host Fredericton, Brookfield this weekend
The Guardian

After eight years, the Maritime Fastball League makes its return to Charlottetown this weekend with six games.

The Hunter’s Ale House Fawcetts will host the Fredericton Fastpitch Club and the Brookfield Elks today and Sunday at City Diamond.

The Fawcetts recently completed their successful exhibition games with a 4-1-2 record.
They are hoping the league and selected tournaments will help them prepare for the 2009 national senior men’s fastpitch championship in St. Thomas, Ont.

Mike Bishop and Mitch Hardy will be toeing the rubber for the Fawcetts this weekend.
Both pitchers were dominant throughout the exhibition schedule.

Hot-hitting Chris Craig and Steven Larter will look to jump start the sluggish Fawcetts offence against some of the Maritime’s best pitching.

“The fans should expect low scoring tight ball games,” said the Fawcetts’ Mark Arsenault.
The Fawcetts will host team for the 2010 nationals.

This weekend’s schedule:

Today – 1 p.m., Fawcetts vs. Fredericton; 3 p.m., Fredericton vs. Brookfield; 5 p.m., Fawcetts vs. Brookfield.
Sunday – 10 a.m., Fawcetts vs. Fredericton; 12 p.m., Fredericton vs. Brookfield; 2 p.m., Fawcetts vs. Brookfield.

Fastball pitcher a medical miracle

Monday, June 8th, 2009

From Canada.com

BY ROB VANSTONE, CANWEST NEWS SERVICE

Former national-team fastball pitcher Rob Scheller continues to confound batters and optometrists alike.

Scheller was supposed to be blind by the time he turned 25. But there he was on the weekend, at age 46, pitching for the Bruno (Sask.) Merchants in a men’s fastball tournament in Regina.

The Saskatoon-based Scheller pitched two scoreless innings Sunday to nail down the Merchants’ 6-1 victory over the Lloydminster Dodgers in the final.

Afterward, a walking miracle sat in the bleachers and discussed his improbable, inspiring story.

“They told me 25 years ago to start taking Braille classes and to get ready to give up my licence,” Scheller said. “I still haven’t taken any Braille classes and I still drive.”

Scheller was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa – a progressive form of tunnel vision – more than 30 years ago. His vision was expected to worsen to the point where it was non-existent.

“I was probably eight or nine years old, just playing hide-and-seek – running into things and hitting a tree,” the easygoing Scheller said. “I just assumed that everybody couldn’t see when it was dark.”

Twenty-five became an ominous figure. The inclination, as he put it, was to “jam a lot of living into the next five or 10 years,” with the result being “a lot of drinking and fooling around.”

In the meantime, Scheller was developing into a world-class pitcher. He once pitched 20 innings at the Pan American Games without surrendering an earned run.

Scheller was a fixture with the national team from the mid-1980s into the early 1990s. His pitching talents were in demand locally and around the globe. He travelled to every Canadian province, virtually every American state, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Japan, Taiwan, Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand and Australia. Elite American teams, such as one in New York, would fly him in on weekends.

Batters seldom had a prayer, but Scheller did. He started going to church.

He hoped, against formidable odds, to stave off the degenerative effects of retinitis pigmentosa. And sure enough . . .

“You can’t put into words how grateful I am,” he said. “I’m playing the game that I love. It would be real tough not to be able to do this, to be honest with you. I feel very blessed, even at my age, to be able to run around and compete at a decent level.”

Scheller has had to make some concessions for health reasons. He pitches while wearing a batting helmet and a football-style face guard – but not because of his vision.

Five years ago, some blood clots broke loose while Scheller was undergoing surgery on his left knee. The blood clots went into his lungs. As a result, he must take blood-thinners. In order to continue pitching, he requires protection such as the customized helmet.

“Any hit to the body could be dangerous right now,” he said. “I feel confident enough that I still want to play, and I do.”

Scheller also frequents the diamonds for other reasons. He and wife Michelle have two sons – Josh, 11, and Joel, 9 – who are involved in ball.

“Watching my kids play is more nerve-racking than pitching in any world- championship game,” noted Scheller, who operates Cool Collectibles in Saskatoon.

“That’s something I wouldn’t be able to do if it had happened at 25. I don’t think I would have had children. I don’t think it would have been fair to myself or the kids.”

As appreciative as Scheller is of his vision, he knows that he does not have the all-clear. The possibility remains that the projection of blindness will be correct, albeit much later than anyone envisioned.

“(The doctors) don’t know what the cure is, or what the cause is,” he said.

“They can give you the best guess, but they can’t explain it.”

Scheller recognizes that the “clock is still ticking,” but the same thing could have been said 25 years ago. Then, as now, Scheller savours every game, and every precious image. It wasn’t supposed to be this way . . . not anymore.

“I would say it’s the power of prayer,” he said with a smile, “without a doubt in my mind.”
