So Cal Bombers upset #7 Riversharks, #5 Circle Tap Enroute to Consolation Bracket Final

From Al’s Fastball: Walsh Story

Championship Game results from Al’s Fastball.

The reports from the Walsh were a little sketchy after the first day’s reports, but the last word we had on the So Cal Bombers is that they were playing for the consolation bracket title, after upsetting another Top 10 team, #5 ranked Circle Tap, on a home run by Gerry Kennedy, the muscle-bound slugger on loan from the Vancouver Grey Sox. The Bombers beat Quaker in a pool play game first thing Saturday morning, on a walk-off home run by Jason Porto, his second of that game.

Update Monday, July 26: The Riversharks of PA beat the Bombers 8-2 in the consolation final.

The “British Columbian” pipeline of talent to So Cal continues into August, as the Bombers will add flamethrowing pitcher Nick Underhill for the ISC World Tournament, while Team Rainey, already led by BC ace Bricklen Anderson during the season, will add another, Vancouver’s Rick Smith, along with position player Dan Whiteford.

Long Beach Black Sox Win Third Alliance Tournament of 2005

Monday, July 25th, 2005

Fred Hanker’s 13 hits, HRs in semi-final and final lead the way

The Long Beach Black Sox won their third Alliance tournament, ending the season as it began in March in Palm Springs when they won the first tournament of the season. The Black Sox topped the Rounders 9-8 in the championship game, after the Rounders rallied from an 8-0 deficit to put the tying run at third in the 7th before Randy Clay closed it out.

No other team in the Alliance won more than one tournament during the season. Ironic, in that the Sox were the last team to qualify for a spot in the ASA “C” Nationals. But for a couple tough Sunday morning draws, they might have made a run for the Alliance Championship. Waiting for official word on who that honor goes to — the Amigos or Primetime. Both made it to the Final Four on Sunday, but fell in the semi-finals, the Amigos to the Black Sox in a wild extra inning affair, 14-13, and Primetime, to the Rounders. A grand slam by Gerald Pyle broke the latter game open. The Amigos and Primetime were tied for the Alliance crown headed into Sunday.

Primetime suffered the loss of workhorse ace Dan Zupp Saturday to a leg injury. The team is cautiously optimistic that he’ll have time to heal before Nationals.

Third Time the Charm for Santa Rosa Storm, Wins ASA Nationals Berth

Saturday, July 23rd, 2005

The disappointment of losing two one-run games to McLaughlin Air and the Rounders on the final day of the Class C National Qualifier last month in Stockton is all but forgotten now that the Santa Rosa Storm has qualified in a National Championship Qualifier held this weekend (July 23-24) in Hayward. The Storm defeated Quality Fence Kings of Santa Rosa, 9-1, and King Real Estate, 9-3, on Saturday to advance into Sunday’s winners bracket finals against Bottom Line (Elk Grove). Bottom Line opened with a 9-4 win over the Oroville Braves, outlasted Black Oak Casino of Sonora, 16-7, and then held off Country Club Villa, 8-4, to move in opposite The Storm. Going into Saturday’s late games, Italian Athletic Club was paired against Oroville, and the winner was to play Country Club Villa, and in the other loser’s bracket games, Bay Area High Reach was to play Black Oak Casino with the winner being paired against King Real Estate. Two more teams out of the six remaining teams in the losers bracket will advance to Sunday’s play and also qualify for the National Tournament. In Saturday’s first game, the Storm took on Qualify Fence, a young team from Santa Rosa which won its first tournament game, 6-3, over the Stogies of Lodi behind the pitching of Jeff Nystrom. Veteran Chris Hamner pitched a four-hitter as the Storm prevailed 9-1 over Quality Fence in five innings. Jewells Valesi, Brian Osborn, and Rick Faccini all went 2×3 and Casey Hillman went 2×2, scored three and drove in three to lead the Storm. Jim Vargas stopped King Realty with a seven hitter and only one earned run. Vargas also singled, doubled and walked and drove in two runs, while his son, Mike, was 2×3, Gary Dower 2×3, Rick Kane 2×4, and Valesi 3×5 with two RBI.
